New Insights on Data Security and Business Goals: A Gartner Report

According to a recent report by Gartner, a mere 14% of leaders in security and risk management are able to simultaneously secure organizational data while facilitating the attainment of business objectives. The survey reveals that while 35% of respondents manage to secure data assets, only 21% can effectively utilize that data to meet business goals. The stark reality emerges that only one in seven organizations manages to accomplish both tasks proficiently.

This significant disparity poses considerable risks for organizations, exposing them to various threats as well as potential regulatory penalties and operational inefficiencies. To help organizations navigate this complex landscape, Gartner has outlined five strategic recommendations.

1. Minimize Governance-Related Friction

Organizations are encouraged to streamline the governance process associated with data security. By implementing a well-structured approach to co-develop security policies and standards, organizations can reduce friction with business units while enhancing security measures.

2. Align Governance Efforts Across Functions

Collaboration is key. By partnering with different internal functions, organizations can effectively identify and address overlapping governance efforts relating to data security, fostering a more cohesive approach.

3. Establish Non-Negotiable Security Requirements

It is crucial to clearly delineate essential security criteria that all business units must adhere to when managing data-related risks. This ensures consistent standards across the organization.

4. Set High-Level Guidelines for GenAI Decisions

With the increasing integration of Generative AI in business processes, organizations should create broad guidelines that define the parameters for experimentation. This allows business groups to innovate while staying within established security boundaries.

5. Engage with Data and Analytics Teams

To enhance data security initiatives, organizations should foster collaboration between security and data analytics teams. Securing commitment from leadership on these initiatives can significantly bolster organizational resilience against security threats.

In conclusion, as organizations face the growing complexities of securing data while promoting business objectives, implementing these recommendations can bridge the gap and strengthen overall data governance frameworks.
