Marathon Developers Reverse Course on Game’s Most Controversial Feature

Bungie has decided to eliminate the contentious aim assist feature for PC players using a mouse and keyboard in its latest game, Marathon, after facing significant criticism.

Despite the Closed Alpha being accessible to a limited number of players—alongside a larger online viewing audience—feedback has been considerable, prompting rapid responses from the development team.

As Bungie ventures into the extraction shooter genre, the initial reception has been lukewarm, with some players calling for a postponement to refine fundamental elements of the game.

A primary concern emerging from player feedback has been the presence of aim assist for PC users, which has garnered significant disdain. In response to this backlash, Bungie has taken decisive action to remove the feature altogether.

Marathon Developers to Remove PC Aim Assist

The decision to eliminate aim assist for PC, confirmed in the upcoming patch notes for Week 2 of the Closed Alpha, reflects a commitment to addressing player concerns.

The term “mouse magnetism,” associated with aim assist, will be removed completely, along with the option to toggle this feature on or off, ensuring a consistent playing field across the board.

This adjustment will shift the gameplay dynamics, making it essential for PC players to rely solely on their skill and input without any assisting features.

“I honestly don’t think I’d play Marathon at launch if mouse aim assist is still in the game. It felt like I literally had an aimbot and made every PVP encounter feel shallow,” one player remarked, highlighting the overpowering advantage provided by the feature.

This feedback comes shortly after prominent streamer Shroud expressed concerns regarding the game’s balance, stating that the aim assist was detrimental to the experience for PC players: “I get that they’re trying to balance between consoles and PCs for crossplay, but it’s only going to ruin the PC part of the game.”

With this latest move, it appears Bungie is prioritizing player feedback and working to adjust the game accordingly.
