Inside Marc Jacobs’ F/W 2025 Presentation: A Harmonious Blend of Art and Fashion
The atmosphere backstage at the Marc Jacobs Fall/Winter 2025 show exuded a sense of serenity that was almost unexpected. Set within the grandiose confines of the New York Public Library, a historic landmark known for its architectural beauty since 1967, the setting itself contributed to the tranquil vibe. Additionally, Jacobs is renowned for maintaining an exclusive backstage environment, which adds to the calmness. Dressed in her signature style of all-black, renowned makeup artist Dame Pat McGrath made her way toward a group of eager spectators. Having already seen some models showcasing large, flowing waves by lead hairstylist Duffy and immaculate skin, there was a sense that McGrath had a few surprises in store.
“The collection explores concepts of dimension, shape, and form,” McGrath articulates. “We are experimenting with two-dimensional designs on the models’ faces.” She motions towards a table separate from the bustling hair and makeup stations, initially misinterpreted as a craft services area. Upon closer inspection, it was adorned with an assortment of felt circles in various sizes and striking shades of black and red. “We have lips, beauty spots—one near the mouth, the other by the eyes—and cheek circles,” she details, showcasing how each element would be positioned on the models’ faces. The cheek and lip accents offered an innovative abstract layer to the radiant skin, while the beauty spots maintained a surprisingly authentic appearance, adorned even with sparkly embellishments.
“When I arrived for the fitting, Mark expressed his desire to incorporate these two-dimensional forms,” she reflects. “The two little red circles on the cheeks symbolize blush, while the circles on the lips represent a kiss, as Marc described.”
McGrath emphasized simplicity for the skin, utilizing a sheer application of her brand’s Skin Fetish: Sublime Perfection Foundation paired with a touch of Skin Fetish: Sublime Perfection Concealer, complemented by lifted brows. To achieve a radiant finish, she applied a hint of Skin Fetish: Highlighter + Balm Duo on the elevated areas of the models’ faces.
The resulting look conveyed the delicate elegance reminiscent of a porcelain doll, juxtaposed against the bold, abstract elements akin to Picasso’s art. This clever interplay of visual contrasts is a signature strength of both McGrath and Jacobs. While it may be a stretch for most to envision attaching felt circles to their cheeks anytime soon, the concept of felt beauty marks might just spark an unexpected trend.
