This week, an emotional reunion took place as composer Marc Shaiman joined the original cast members of Hairspray—Marissa Jaret Winokur, who portrayed Tracy, along with Amber and Penny—for a captivating performance of “Mama, I’m a Big Girl Now” at New World Stages.
A video shared on Marissa Jaret Winokur’s official TikTok account captured the moment when Shaiman presented a short public service announcement that had been removed from the show during its Seattle run. The footage also features Shaiman’s husband, Lou, stepping onto the stage to play Link, a role that added an extra layer of excitement to the performance.
As Hairspray nears the conclusion of its run at New World Stages, which lasts until December 21, 2024, it continues to offer audiences a delightful blend of humor, nostalgia, and musical brilliance. The production boasts a talented cast, including Tony nominees Laura Bell Bundy (Legally Blonde) and Kerry Butler (Beetlejuice, Xanadu), alongside Tony winner Marissa Jaret Winokur. The trio’s return to the stage offers a unique opportunity for fans to relive the joy they brought to the original Hairspray production, highlighted by memorable musical numbers and heartfelt performances.

The extended performances are set for December 14 at 2 PM and 8 PM, December 16 at 7 PM, and December 21 at both 2 PM and 8 PM in 2024, ensuring that more fans can experience this delightful celebration of Broadway and friendship.
