Secretary of State Marco Rubio faced significant backlash on social media following a moment during President Donald Trump‘s contentious interaction with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky that was widely shared online.
One commentator on X suggested, “If Marco Rubio wants to save what’s left of his soul and his honor, he’d resign immediately,” reflecting the critical sentiment toward Rubio’s apparent inaction during a tense moment.
Another user remarked on Rubio’s expression, implying he had reservations about his role, stating, “Marco Rubio regretting he took the job.” The tone of discourse quickly escalated, with many users labeling Rubio a “coward” and describing him as “one of the saddest people in the history of this f—ing world” as Trump’s meeting with Zelensky gained notoriety for its flow of chaotic dialogue.
Slate’s politics editor, Jim Newell, humorously inquired, “How we doin bud?” which led to a wave of memes poking fun at Rubio’s evident discomfort.
Pod Save America host Jon Favreau added to the discourse, saying, “No one has wanted to be severed more than Marco Rubio in this job,” making a reference to the Apple TV+ series “Severance” that plays on themes of disconnection and dissatisfaction.
A.J. Catoline, noted for his work on “Ted Lasso,” contributed a sharp remark directed at Rubio, suggesting, “Go lick Putin’s boot, Marco,” and accompanied it with a meme related to severance.
Criticism became more pointed as observers analyzed the implications of the unproductive meeting, expressing concerns about its potential to hinder efforts to resolve the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
“Marco Rubio looks absolutely disgusted. He knows deep down Zelensky is the one we should be defending but he sold his soul to MAGA,” another user articulated, emphasizing a belief that Rubio’s political affiliations clouded his judgment on critical issues.
Further commentary suggested, “You literally could do a daily picture of Marco Rubio swimming in the misery of knowing he gave away a longterm Senate job only to get none of the prestige of being SoS and all the responsibility for letting kids and Ukraine die,” highlighting the high stakes involved in his political maneuvering.
Despite the negative sentiment directed at him, Rubio attempted to project a positive image in the aftermath of the meeting. He posted a message on X, lauding Trump for “putting America first,” and expressing gratitude for Trump’s courage in leadership.
“Thank you @POTUS for standing up for America in a way that no President has ever had the courage to do before. Thank you for putting America First. America is with you!,” he tweeted, striving to reinforce his commitment to the administration’s agenda despite the surrounding controversy.
