Mariah Carey recently shared her thoughts on creating the music video for “We Belong Together,” the second single from her acclaimed 2005 album, The Emancipation of Mimi, in a segment for Vevo Footnotes. She reflected on the collaborative process behind the song with Jermaine Dupri and expressed the satisfaction of weaving the narrative from a previous video into this one. “We Belong Together” acts as a continuation of the love triangle story involving her character, Mimi, as well as those portrayed by Wentworth Miller and Eric Roberts in her earlier video for “It’s Like That”.
Carey expressed her excitement about linking two projects through a shared storyline, remarking, “This was the first time I accomplished such a narrative connection across music videos. I was confident that we could unify them, even with the songs having distinct sounds. The fashion aspect was also thrilling, transitioning from a black two-piece to donning a stunning wedding dress designed by Vera Wang.”
The wedding dress carries a notable history as it was the same gown she wore during her first marriage to record executive Tommy Mottola in 1993. After their divorce in 1998, revisiting this dress for the video serves as a significant reminder of her past, a choice she discussed lightly in her Footnotes commentary. “I figured, since I needed a wedding dress for the scene, I could save money and simply use the one I already had!” she noted with a hint of humor.
Moreover, Carey revealed that time constraints during the shoot necessitated some improvisation with filming locations. “We couldn’t complete all the scenes on the initial shoot day, so I ended up filming my segments in the white kaftan and while lying in bed during a promotional tour in London,” she explained.

Despite the challenges, she described the overall experience of making the video as fulfilling. “I’m incredibly grateful that the label supported my vision and allowed me to create this grand, dramatic video. I’m also pleased it touched many people, and it continues to resonate with fans today,” Carey shared.
Later this year, Carey plans to celebrate The Emancipation of Mimi with a deluxe reissue that will feature a cappella renditions, instrumentals, and previously unreleased tracks, alongside other unique additions. “This album contains some of my most significant hits along with personal favorites that hold a special place in my heart,” she stated in a recent announcement.
