Note: This story contains spoilers from “NCIS: Origins” Episode 6.
Episode 6 of “NCIS: Origins” delves into the complex inner world of Lala Dominguez, illuminating both her personal challenges and her evolving relationship with Leroy Jethro Gibbs. The action-packed installment, titled “Incognito,” provides a gripping exploration of Lala, portrayed by Mariel Molino, as she navigates the difficulties of her male-dominated workplace while facing personal turmoil at home.
This episode sheds light on the deepening bond between Lala and Gibbs (Austin Stowell), illustrating her growing emotions, which Molino describes as both beautiful and daunting. “Her feelings toward Gibbs are becoming more intense, which is frightening for her. However, this evolution stems from a genuine desire to protect him and stand by his side,” she explained in an interview with TheWrap.
Since its premiere, “NCIS: Origins” has positioned the relationship between Lala and Gibbs as a pivotal element in Gibbs’ journey within the NIS. Co-creator and co-showrunner Gina Lucita Monreal acknowledges that Lala’s narrative raises a significant question: what ultimately happened to her, as Gibbs never references her in the main “NCIS” series. “The mystery surrounding her is central to our storytelling, and it’s something we explore thoroughly in our writers’ discussions,” Monreal shared, expressing enthusiasm for the plot’s upcoming developments.
Monreal also indicated that some answers regarding Lala’s fate will emerge by the conclusion of Season 1, which has recently been expanded to a full 18 episodes following a season renewal from CBS.
In this latest episode, Lala grapples with the consequences of a night out that results in an impulsive kiss with a colleague, complicating her emotional landscape. This incident comes at a time when her boyfriend is pressuring her to make room for him in her life, hinting at further upheaval. Driven by guilt, Lala faces an escalation in tension, particularly in her interactions with Gibbs, challenging his differential treatment towards her compared to her male counterparts.
Monreal emphasized the importance of portraying Lala’s complexity and emotional depth, praising Molino’s performance as essential in bringing this character to life. “I wanted to ensure we embraced her femininity in a way that feels authentic without diminishing her strength. There’s power in both assertive actions and empathetic interactions, and Mariel encapsulates this duality beautifully,” Monreal added.
Additionally, Monreal seeks to present Lala as a multidimensional Latina character, whose narrative transcends racial stereotypes, allowing viewers to appreciate her as a fully realized person first and foremost. “It’s vital for audiences to connect with her humanity while recognizing her identity,” she concluded.
“NCIS: Origins” airs Mondays at 10 p.m. ET/PT on CBS and is available for streaming the following day on Paramount+.
