Marine Nationale Triumphs in Punchestown Chase
Marine Nationale followed up his victory in the Queen Mother Champion Chase with a convincing win in the Irish counterpart at Punchestown.
Having recently claimed a dominant victory at the Cheltenham Festival, Marine Nationale was a 2-1 second favorite in a compelling race against the notable Fact To File, who was the odds-on favorite at 11-10.
From the outset, the pace was set by Solness, causing Fact To File to struggle to keep up. In contrast, Marine Nationale maintained strong form under jockey Sean Flanagan. The race remained competitive until El Fabiolo fell two fences from the finish, tipping the balance in Marine Nationale’s favor.
With that setback, Marine Nationale seized command, accelerating impressively from the last jump to win by seven lengths, finishing ahead of Captain Guinness, with Solness in third place and Fact To File disappointing in last.
Champ Kiely Shines in Novice Chase
In another thrilling event, Champ Kiely surprised his more favored stablemate Ballyburn to secure victory in the Dooley Insurance Group Champion Novice Chase.
Trainer Willie Mullins entered five competitors in the eight-horse race, but early misfortunes saw Cheltenham winner Lecky Watson fall and bring down Impaire Et Passe. Additionally, Ile Atlantique fell later in the race.
Ballyburn, a favorite at 11-8, took the lead on the second circuit, but Champ Kiely, a 22-1 longshot, remained close behind. As they approached the finish, Champ Kiely found another gear, crossing the line six and a half lengths ahead of Ballyburn.
Mullins remarked on the race, stating, “Champ Kiely bounced back impressively today. Danny rode with immense confidence, allowing him to capitalize on the situation.” Regarding Ballyburn, Mullins noted some inconsistencies in jumping and indicated that a return to hurdling might be considered for next season.
Kopek Des Bordes Faces Unexpected Defeat
Kopek Des Bordes suffered his first defeat as stablemate Irancy claimed victory in the KPMG Champion Novice Hurdle, marking a successful day for Willie Mullins.
Initially seen as a front-runner, Kopek Des Bordes, who had recently succeeded at the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle, faced obstacles early on that affected his performance. By the time they turned for home, he was significantly behind the leaders.
In contrast, Irancy, a longer-shot at 18-1, made a solid entrance, riding strongly under Mark Walsh to secure the win by nine lengths. Mullins expressed the need for adjustments regarding Kopek Des Bordes’ training strategy moving forward.
Ascending Lark Captures Handicap Spoils
British competitor Ascending Lark showcased her skill by maintaining an unbeaten record over obstacles with a victory in the Killashee Hotel Handicap Hurdle.
Having transitioned into successful stabling, the seven-year-old horse secured her place in the spotlight with this latest win, previously accumulating victories across multiple venues.
Despite facing a tougher challenge at 8-1 odds, she excelled under a measured ride from Paul O’Brien, clinching the victory by three-quarters of a length over Jonjo O’Neill’s Wilful.
Reflecting on the day’s triumph, trainer Harry Derham noted, “Winning six times in a row is no easy feat, and I’m grateful for the patience shown by the owners.” This marked the second British success of the day, as 50-1 longshot Buy Some Time also impressed with a surprise win in a separate race.
Trainer Mike Smith shared the joy of his son’s victory, emphasizing the significance of the day and the unpredictability of outcomes in racing.
The Kildare Hunt Club Cross Country Chase saw Transprint triumph, giving trainer Richie O’Keeffe a notable one-two finish with another runner.
