Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) faced criticism on Tuesday after mistakenly referring to the Gulf of Mexico by its historical name, a move that contradicts her outspoken opposition to the term.
This incident occurred on the social media platform X, previously known as Twitter, as she promoted her proposed legislation, the Gulf of America Act. The act aims to formalize President Donald Trump’s directive to rename the Gulf of Mexico to the “Gulf of America.”
In her comments, Greene claimed, “Mexican cartels currently use the Gulf of Mexico to traffic humans, drugs, weapons, and God knows what else while the Mexican government allows them to do it.” This statement highlighted her use of the original name, which contradicts the renaming initiative.
She further asserted, “The rightful name is the Gulf of America and it’s what the entire world should call it,” emphasizing her support for the rebranding.
Following backlash, Greene modified her post to eliminate the mention of the “Gulf of Mexico,” instead opting for a more vague reference of “the Gulf,” an attempt to align her statement with Trump’s decree.
However, the original post remained visible online, leading to further scrutiny and mockery from users.
Critics on social media pointed out that there are more significant issues that require attention, suggesting that Greene’s focus on the renaming initiative may overlook pressing legislative needs.
