[Warning: The content below contains significant spoilers for Severance Season 2 Episode 10, “Cold Harbor.”]
The season finale of Severance has officially aired, marking the end of Season 2 and bringing the series’ own aftershow, iLUMONations: A Severance Aftershow, to a close as well.
In the episode titled “Cold Harbor,” Mark, portrayed by Adam Scott, completes a crucial work assignment in the Managed Dynamic Reporting (MDR) department. During a camcorder exchange with his outer self, or “outie,” he learns that his outie’s wife, Gemma, played by Dichen Lachman, is imprisoned on a lower floor and in perilous danger.
Realizing the seriousness of the situation, Mark informs Helly (Britt Lower), who orchestrates a distraction to divert the attention of their floor manager, Mr. Milchick (Tramell Tillman), through a celebratory performance that honors Mark’s work achievement. This maneuver gives Mark the opportunity to locate Gemma via the elevator in the Exports hallway.
However, an unexpected confrontation with Mr. Drummond (Ólafur Darri Ólafsson), a higher-up at Lumon, leads to a physical altercation involving Lorne (Gwendoline Christie), the head of the Mammalians Nurturable Department. The struggle escalates, with Mark forcing Mr. Drummond to face him at nail gun-point.
When Mark’s outie is activated during the elevator ride, a tragic accident occurs, resulting in him unintentionally shooting Mr. Drummond in the neck, creating a shocking scenario for his outer self. Nevertheless, Mark quickly refocuses on his mission and finds the Cold Harbor room, where he discovers Gemma still under the effects of the severance procedure.
After bringing her into the hallway, Gemma’s outie is reactivated, leading to an emotional reunion that is cut short as they rush to escape Dr. Mauer (Robby Benson) from Lumon. Using the elevator to ascend, they find themselves switched back to their innie forms, with Gemma reverting to her innie persona, Ms. Casey.
Despite the overwhelming urge to flee together, Mark remains torn and ultimately rushes to Helly’s side instead of following Gemma. In this intense episode, actors Lachman, Tillman, Christie, and Jen Tullock, who plays Mark’s sister Devon, reflect on the critical moments of the finale during the aftershow.
The discussions span various themes, from Mark’s communications between his innie and outie to the violent encounter between Lorne and Mr. Drummond, as well as Gemma’s emotional state at the moment Mark turns away. Lachman describes their long-anticipated reunion as “quite cathartic,” expressing her deep connection to Gemma and the poignant nature of Mark’s feelings for her.
As the final moments unfold, Lachman shares her emotional response to Gemma’s rejection, stating, “I couldn’t stop crying… I had to just take a moment because it is so, so sad.” For further insights, the full video interview is available for viewing, and viewers are encouraged to share their thoughts on the Severance finale in the comments section below.
