Mastodon Announces Split from Co-Founder Brent Hinds After 25 Years

Mastodon, the influential Atlanta-based metal band, revealed on Friday that they and guitarist Brent Hinds have mutually decided to part ways after 25 years together. The announcement was made via the band’s social media channels, expressing pride in their shared musical journey and wishing Hinds well in his future endeavors.

“Friends and Fans, after 25 monumental years together, Mastodon and Brent Hinds have mutually decided to part ways,” the band stated. They emphasized their gratitude for the music they’ve created together and conveyed their enthusiasm for the future, assuring fans that they remain dedicated to their musical path.

Founded in 2000, Mastodon featured Hinds as the lead guitarist and vocalist, alongside fellow members Troy Sanders (bass/vocals), Brann Dailor (drums), and Bill Kelliher (rhythm guitar). Over their quarter-century journey, the band has released eight studio albums, from their debut Remission in 2002 to their latest offering, Hushed and Grim, which came out in 2021.

Their 2004 album, Leviathan, earned a spot on Rolling Stone’s list of the 100 Greatest Metal Albums of All Time, highlighting the band’s significant impact on the genre. Additionally, Mastodon received their first Grammy Award in 2018 for Best Metal Performance with the track “Sultan’s Curse.”

Recently, the band had collaborated with Lamb of God on a new single titled “Floods of Triton,” marking Hinds’ last contribution with the group. Earlier this week, fellow band members Sanders, Dailor, and Kelliher participated in a panel discussion at the Metropolitan Opera, focusing on Leviathan and its connection to the opera Moby-Dick, which is also inspired by the works of Herman Melville. Notably, Hinds was absent from this event.

While the band did not provide specific reasons for Hinds’ departure, they confirmed that it would not alter their upcoming touring schedule. “As we move forward, all 2025 touring plans will remain intact. We look forward to seeing you on the road,” Mastodon reassured their fans.

This significant shift in the band’s lineup opens a new chapter for Mastodon, who remain committed to their legacy and the production of innovative music for their dedicated fanbase.
