The England women’s rugby team, known as the Red Roses, commenced their Women’s Six Nations campaign on a positive note, securing a decisive victory over Italy. However, the team’s struggles in the second half may present challenges for head coach John Mitchell moving forward.
In a commanding performance, the Red Roses triumphed with a 38-5 scoreline, showcasing their offensive strength by scoring five first-half tries. Wing Mia Venner, centre Emily Scarratt, wing Claudia MacDonald, and hooker Amy Cokayne each added to the score sheet, alongside a penalty try awarded after Italy’s Laura Gurioli was assessed for illegal binding during a maul.
Italy managed to respond with a try from No 8 Francesca Sgorbini in the first half, which heightened their competitive spirit. Although Sgorbini seemed poised to score again early in the second half, a review by the Television Match Official (TMO) resulted in a disallowance of the try due to lineout obstruction that occurred earlier in the sequence, despite the conversion having been successfully executed.
In the latter stages of the match, full-back Emma Sing added England’s only try of the second half just before the final whistle and contributed significantly with three successful conversions, allowing the Red Roses to pursue their goal of achieving a historic fourth consecutive Grand Slam.
What’s next?
England’s next challenge will be against Wales at the Principality Stadium on Saturday, March 29, with kickoff scheduled for 4:45 PM.
Italy will host Ireland at the Stadio Sergio Lanfranchi in Parma for their second-round match on Sunday, March 30, starting at 3 PM.
