Leeds Rhinos Secure Victory Over Huddersfield Giants with Strong Performance
Last Updated: 18/04/25 7:54pm
Kallum Watkins marked his return to Leeds Rhinos with a memorable performance as the team triumphed 28-6 against Huddersfield Giants at Headingley. This victory continues a troubling trend for Huddersfield, who are now facing their ninth consecutive defeat across all competitions.
In a match that showcased both determination and resilience, former Rhinos captain Watkins, who had just rejoined the club from Salford, scored his team’s second try shortly after the half-time break. The game started slowly for Leeds, with their initial attempts to score thwarted by both a vigilant Huddersfield defense and the video referee, which ruled out three early tries.
Lachlan Miller opened the scoring for Leeds, overcoming the Giants’ defense after a lengthy wait of over 30 minutes. The home side eventually broke through when Ash Handley, Jake Connor, and Ryan Hall added to their tally, allowing Leeds to break free from earlier frustrations and secure their third victory in four matches of the Super League season.
Huddersfield managed to secure a consolation try late in the game, as Tom Burgess crossed the try line. Despite their spirited effort, the Giants continued to struggle with their performance this season, marked by significant player absences due to injury.
Leeds’ scrum-half Matt Frawley and second-row Morgan Gannon both came close to scoring but were denied, exemplifying the Rhinos’ mix of promise and frustration during the match. Further setbacks for Huddersfield occurred as Burgess was assessed for concussion, and centre Liam Sutcliffe exited with a leg injury, exacerbating their already significant injury crisis.
Despite being pinned back, Huddersfield initially appeared poised to take an unexpected lead when Sam Halsall might have touched down from a Jake Bibby kick. However, a review by the video referee determined no try had been scored.
As Leeds progressively improved their performance, the turning point came just before the half-time whistle when Harry Newman played a pivotal role by feeding Miller, who skillfully navigated through a gap in the Giants’ defense to score. Watkins, receiving a warm welcome from the home crowd, added to Leeds’ tally just six minutes into the second half, showcasing his return with a powerfully executed try close to the posts.
Following Watkins’ score, Handley capitalized on a high kick and Connor subsequently scored following a brilliant assist from James McDonnell. Hall concluded Leeds’ scoring with a try in the corner, pushing the lead to 28-0 before Burgess managed to salvage a late point for the Giants.
