WXV1: England’s Red Roses secure two victories as they defeat New Zealand’s Black Ferns in British Columbia; following their win against the USA, New Zealand faces two losses against Ireland and England; England’s next challenge is against hosts Canada on Saturday.

Abby Dow demonstrated her prowess by scoring twice as England’s Red Roses delivered an impressive performance, registering nine tries in their WXV1 match against New Zealand.
In a dominant display, England’s Red Roses overpowered New Zealand’s Black Ferns, finishing with a score of 49-31 in the WXV1 Round 2 encounter held in Canada.
Despite a quick setback with New Zealand taking an early lead of 7-0, England quickly regained control, scoring four consecutive tries by the break. Abby Dow opened the scoring for England in the 10th minute, followed by Jess Breach in the 19th, and two tries from full-back Ellie Kildunne at the 28th and 40th minutes.
The Black Ferns initially claimed the lead with a try from Kaipo Olsen-Baker in the 6th minute, and later added another through Ayesha Leti-I’iga in the 35th minute. However, by halftime, they found themselves trailing 22-12.
As the second half commenced, England continued their momentum with Dow scoring her second try in the 45th minute, followed closely by Breach’s second try at the 51st minute. Scrum-half Natasha Hunt also made her mark on the scoreboard at the 49th minute.
New Zealand responded with tries from Georgia Ponsonby in the 55th minute and Maia Roos in the 66th minute, demonstrating resilience. Nonetheless, Breach completed her hat-trick, sealing England’s dominance in the match. In the final stages, substitute Zoe Harrison added a ninth try for England, while Maama Vaipulu of New Zealand rounded off the scoring with a consolation try in the final moments.
England, the defending WXV1 champions, had started their 2024 campaign with a convincing 61-21 victory over the USA, showcasing depth with eight different try scorers in Vancouver.
Meanwhile, New Zealand faced a surprising defeat in their opening match against Ireland, where they lost 29-27, marking a challenging start to their tournament.
Looking ahead, England’s Red Roses will meet the hosts Canada on Saturday, October 12. Canada has also fared well so far, winning both of their matches against France and Ireland in a commanding manner.
