Vitor Pereira Addresses Matheus Cunha’s Future at Wolves
Head coach Vitor Pereira has downplayed any immediate concerns regarding Matheus Cunha’s dedication to Wolverhampton Wanderers, despite the striker expressing his desire to explore new opportunities.
In a recent conversation with the Observer, the Brazilian international voiced his aspirations to “take the next step” in his career, indicating a longing to compete for trophies.
Cunha, who previously played for Atletico Madrid, is bound by a £62.5 million release clause in the contract he signed in February, which lasts for four and a half years.
As Wolves currently find themselves in 17th place, just nine points clear of the Premier League relegation zone, Pereira remains optimistic about Cunha’s commitment as the club strives to solidify its status in the top flight.
“He is committed. This is the present. The future, I don’t know,” Pereira remarked. “He knows his potential. He is a top player. It’s normal he has the ambition to fight for titles. It’s natural for players to have such aspirations, but the priority is to be dedicated and assist the team in achieving our goals. We will assess everything at the end of the season.”
This season, Cunha has made a notable impact, netting 15 goals for Wolves. His contributions recently included scoring for Brazil during a World Cup qualifying match against Argentina, despite the team suffering a significant defeat that led to the dismissal of coach Dorival Junior.
Currently serving a four-match suspension for inappropriate conduct after being sent off during an FA Cup match against Bournemouth, Cunha will miss the upcoming fixture against West Ham and a subsequent trip to Ipswich, with a return expected for the clash against Tottenham on April 13.
Pereira emphasized the need to concentrate on the immediate challenges, stating, “The focus is on the next game. Our priority is the team, and while Matheus is part of the team, he will not play in this match, but my attention is on the collective effort of the squad.”
