Matthew Lawrence Reflects on His Unmasking in The Masked Singer
Matthew Lawrence recently became the first member of the Lucky 6 group to be revealed on The Masked Singer. The actor, best known for his roles in various television series and films, was voted off after delivering a performance of “Unpretty” by TLC.
Within Paparazzo’s second clue package, numerous hints pointed to Lawrence’s time in Mrs. Doubtfire, where he starred alongside the legendary Robin Williams. “That experience was unforgettable,” he said. “The crew had just completed work on Jurassic Park. Working with Steven Spielberg and Chris Columbus alongside Robin was life-changing. He took me under his wing, mentoring me not only as an artist but also as a person. I deeply miss him and am honored to have shared that time with him.”
In a touching tribute to Williams, Paparazzo performed “Hallelujah” by Jeff Buckley during “Shrek Night.” Lawrence described the experience as “spiritual,” noting, “Despite the challenges of the costume and the performance, there was a moment when I could truly connect with the audience. I lost myself in the music and realized, ‘I’m actually doing this!’ That feeling was incredibly special.”

For his final appearance in the competition, Lawrence revealed that he received “just a little help” from his famous girlfriend, Rozanda “Chilli” Thomas of TLC. He chose to perform “Unpretty,” a top hit from her group. “When I accepted the show’s invitation, one question asked for a guilty pleasure song I would sing in the shower. I humorously listed ‘Unpretty,’ which is totally accurate! As a guy, I didn’t want to admit singing it, but it’s true—I’d belt it out privately. When Fox reached out, I had to ask Chilli if her bandmate, Tionne [T-Boz Watkins], would permit me to sing it. They were incredibly supportive, and it was a true honor to perform that song.”
Lawrence expressed that performing “That’s Amore” during “Rat Pack Night” was a highlight for him as it allowed him to connect with his Italian heritage. “It was so much fun,” he said with enthusiasm. “My immigrant family had difficulty pronouncing our original last name, Mignogna, which is why we adopted Lawrence—my father’s middle name—because nobody could say it!”
Fans can keep up with Matthew Lawrence and his brothers, Joey and Andy Lawrence, through their podcast, Brotherly Love, which is available on all major podcast platforms. The next episode of The Masked Singer is set to air on April 23 on Fox.
