Mayfair Witches has navigated a tumultuous journey, but the second season has demonstrated that this installment of AMC’s Immortals Universe deserves recognition. The season finale, Episode 8, resolved numerous plot lines while offering tantalizing hints about potential story arcs for a third season.

Initially, my expectations for this season were low, but the narrative developments have sparked genuine curiosity about the show’s future.

While the series has had its missteps, it undoubtedly delivered memorable moments that highlighted the strength of its writing.

The conclusion of the storyline set in Scotland proved to be both harrowing and pivotal. Much debate has surrounded Rowan’s character, particularly regarding her apparent support for Lasher.

Throughout the finale, her actions were motivated by a deeper understanding of Lasher, shattering her prior beliefs about him being purely malevolent. Instead of viewing him as a monster, she felt compelled to rescue him and the children of Emmaleth, fully aware of the danger it posed to her well-being.

Should Mayfair Witches Have Done a Better Job With Julien?

Julien’s decision to drug and imprison Rowan was predictable, given the ambiguity surrounding his intentions regarding Cortland’s body. Rowan was destined to fulfill a greater purpose, which is why she was spared during their confrontation.

Her swift awakening in a jail cell alongside Sip and Paulina felt somewhat contrived, especially considering Kilbride’s secretive settings that should have facilitated better containment. However, Alexandra Daddario convincingly portrayed a wary version of Rowan, raising questions about how Sip and Paulina managed to find her during a critical moment.

The series benefits from keeping the romantic subplot between Rowan and Sip at bay. The pacing felt premature, and a more gradual buildup might have made their eventual romance feel more organic.

Without the assistance of Sip and Paulina, Rowan would not have succeeded in saving Lasher from a lethal injury. Despite facing immense challenges, she proved resourceful and resilient throughout the finale.

Although she managed to save Lasher, his ultimate death—this time by a striking axe—marked a significant turning point in the storyline. Lasher’s arc closed poignantly, even if it was preceded by a series of unusual events.

The sequence revealing the gruesome deaths of Lasher and Emmaleth’s offspring, followed by the consumption of their blood to obtain power, certainly caught me off guard. Given the eerie atmosphere that enveloped Kilbride, however, it felt like a fitting climax.

Julien Could Be a Great Villain

While Julien may not stand out as an exceptional villain, he exhibits a volatility that complicates his character—evident in his unexpected proposition for an alliance with Rowan after a blood-drinking ritual.

Such a shocking suggestion raises questions about his motivations and the potential for increased dominance through partnership. Fortunately, Rowan has gained enough insight into her lineage over the past two seasons to recognize when to fight her battles, prioritizing the safety of the children.

However, the show made a critical misstep by eliminating Polina too early. As a key figure in the mystical firm Talamasca, her knowledge could have significantly enriched the narrative. The decision felt hasty and detracted from the depth of the plot.

With the children’s unique powers likely to draw interest from various witches, the Talamasca’s involvement remains crucial, suggesting prospective conflicts and alliances.

As for Julien, I remain undecided about whether he should serve as the principal antagonist in a potential Season 3 of Mayfair Witches.

Is it Game Over for Rowan and Lark?

Rowan’s tense encounter with Lark amidst the Mayfair estate carried a sense of foreboding, as his presence has seemingly replaced Lasher’s as a trigger for unexpected turmoil.

It’s possible the creators anticipated the series might not return for another season, prompting a rapid resolution to certain plot threads to provide a sense of closure. Ben Feldman’s addition as Lark has been refreshing, but his struggle to grasp Rowan’s complex world indicates that their paths may need to diverge.

Although their separation appears to safeguard Lark from danger, I can’t shake the fear that Julien may target him as retaliation against Rowan.

One wonders why Rowan refrained from disclosing crucial information before Lark consumed the memory-altering tea.

In summary, this season has marked a significant improvement over its predecessor, garnering hope for further stories from the Mayfair women.

If the show is ultimately discontinued, there remains potential for narratives to continue through related projects like Interview with the Vampire and The Talamasca.

What did you think of the season finale? Did the pacing feel rushed? How do you view Lasher’s fate and Julien’s ongoing role? Would you like to see more of Lark in a possible Season 3?

Hit the comments.
