CBS Reports | Does Big Plastic’s Idea Work?
Significant updates are on the horizon for McDonald’s McFlurry dessert, beginning September 10. In a move that caters to both indulgence and sustainability, the fast-food chain will introduce a smaller size option for its popular treat, alongside a commitment to more eco-friendly packaging, as announced in a recent statement from the company.
McDonald’s is set to phase out the previously used plastic lids, opting instead for a “more environmentally friendly four-flap cup.” This enhancement reflects the company’s ongoing efforts to reduce its environmental impact. Starting next week, customers will be able to enjoy their McFlurry in these innovative cups.
In a notable shift, the company also replaced the traditional hollow-handle plastic spoon with a smaller, more sustainable utensil last year. This change shows McDonald’s commitment to rethinking its approach to packaging across its product line.
Michael Gonda, McDonald’s chief impact officer for North America, emphasized the significance of these packaging adjustments. “Packaging updates like this matter,” he noted. “Not only is this a fun new way for our U.S. fans to enjoy the McFlurry, we’re also moving one step closer to fulfilling our packaging and waste commitments.”
Internationally, the four-flap cups are already in use in some markets, including Canada and Indonesia, indicating that McDonald’s is keen to standardize its sustainable practices across the globe.
This initiative aligns with McDonald’s broader sustainability objectives, aiming to utilize entirely renewable, recycled, or certified materials for its packaging by the end of 2025. The company is focusing on reducing hard-to-recycle plastics in its operations, which include items such as bags, cutlery, and straws.
