[Warning: The below contains MAJOR spoilers for NCIS Season 22 Episode 19 “Irreconcilable Differences.”]
In the latest episode of NCIS, McGee (Sean Murray) is resolute in his mission to apprehend Laroche (Seamus Dever). The narrative heavily references Gibbs (Mark Harmon), McGee’s former mentor who departed in Season 19, highlighting McGee’s internal struggle and the lingering influence Gibbs has on him.
The episode unfolds with McGee in his basement, mirroring Gibbs’ demeanor by dressing similarly and pouring himself a drink. He notices an Alaska postcard, triggering a vision of himself aboard a boat. Soon after, he hears a noise upstairs and instinctively calls out for his boss, only to find Laroche there. In a shocking turn of events, Laroche shoots him, leading McGee to wake up at his desk surrounded by evidence of his investigation into Laroche.
Throughout the episode, Torres (Wilmer Valderrama) comments on the surreal nature of dreams, while Knight (Katrina Law) interprets McGee’s dreams as reflections of his anxiety over failure and the high standards he sets for himself, primarily influenced by Gibbs. When Parker (Gary Cole) suggests McGee take a break after working for three consecutive nights, McGee fiercely responds, “I can do my job, Gibbs!”—underscoring his mounting pressure.
Attempting to escape his turmoil, McGee heads toward his vehicle but is compelled to follow Laroche, who is without his usual security detail. After a series of tense maneuvers, including Laroche switching cars, McGee witnesses him commit a murder at an abandoned power plant. Despite his insistence on having witnessed the event, McGee faces skepticism, especially from Vance (Rocky Carroll), who demands solid proof of Laroche’s crimes.
Amidst the chaos, the team investigates a robbery involving a military-grade signal jammer, diverting their attention from McGee’s case against Laroche. The investigation reveals a link between the robbery and Laroche, suggesting that he is financially desperate, potentially leading him to engage criminals to facilitate illicit operations.
However, Inspector General Ward confronts McGee with a formal misconduct complaint, believed to have been orchestrated by Laroche. Despite his claims of innocence, Ward interprets McGee’s investigation as motivated by jealousy and issues a recommendation for his indefinite suspension. The situation escalates when McGee requests legal counsel after revealing he has information on Laroche’s whereabouts.
The turning point arrives when the team uncovers critical evidence: a stolen phone belonging to the murdered thief contains a mint that Laroche favors, establishing a direct connection between him and the crime. When Ward returns to question McGee, she finds that he has left a note referencing Gibbs’ Rule #45, symbolizing his determination to rectify the situation.
In a dramatic confrontation, McGee ambushes Laroche during a meeting with Shaker, brandishing his weapon while echoing Gibbs’ wisdom. After a tense exchange, Laroche shoots Shaker, leading to another chaotic moment where McGee possibly gets injured. As Laroche surrenders to the team, he hints at deeper conspiracies regarding the information Shaker possessed, stating, “It’s time you know the truth.” This revelation raises questions about the true nature of his motivations.
As the episode concludes, viewers are left pondering the implications of Laroche’s secrets. What lies behind this revelation? Share your thoughts in the comments below.
