Meghan Markle Reflects on Hair Care Journey in Recent Podcast Episode
In a recent episode of her podcast Confessions of a Female Founder, Meghan Markle invited her longtime friend and hair colorist, Kadi Lee, to discuss their experiences with natural hair care, particularly during their formative years.
Released on April 22, this episode highlights the challenges and revelations both women faced as they navigated their hair journeys. Kadi Lee, co-founder of the Highbrow Hippie salon and product line in Los Angeles, shared her empowering experiences from attending Spelman College, a prestigious Historically Black College for women, noting that she is recognized today for her work with blonde highlights and a celebrity clientele.
Meghan recalled her college days at Northwestern University, where she was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority from 1999 to 2003. Reflecting on her styling methods, she admitted the limitations of the time, saying, “I don’t even think they made plug-in flat irons at the time.” Instead, she described using a stove to heat her flat iron, often leading to comments from her non-Black sorority sisters who were confused by the smell of heated hair products.
“What’s that smell? Is hair burning?” she recalled them asking, an indication of the cultural differences in hair care practices. Meghan’s memory touches on the broader struggle many women of color face in learning how to manage their unique hair textures, often without accessible resources or products tailored to their needs.
As someone of biracial descent, Meghan has previously discussed her own difficulties in finding suitable hair care products. During an earlier conversation with Mariah Carey on her former podcast Archetypes, Meghan shared her anxiety over using products that felt overly heavy and unfamiliar, making her feel overwhelmed.
In the podcast, Meghan also reminisced about her childhood experiences with her grandmother, who helped her manage her thick, curly hair. Her grandmother had a unique approach, ensuring that Meghan was ready to endure some discomfort during styling sessions, emphasizing resilience in hair care routines.
This latest dialogue is part of a series where Meghan aims to uplift Black female entrepreneurship, as they discussed the underrepresentation of Black women in business. Markle also shared insights on her own brand, revealing the success of her recently launched line, As Ever, which has already sold out its initial food product offerings.
Additionally, Meghan revealed how she got connected to her royal wedding hairstylist, Serge Normant, who suggested Kadi Lee after a DIY pandemic hair coloring attempt resulted in a less-than-desirable look for her. “You need to see Kadi,” Serge told her, leading to a successful partnership that has evolved over the years.
Markle’s recollections not only provide insight into her personal experiences with hair but also serve as a reminder of the broader cultural narratives surrounding beauty standards and hair care within diverse communities.
