Mehdi Hasan on Cory Booker and Political Landscape Ahead of 2028
Former MSNBC host Mehdi Hasan expressed skepticism regarding discussions about Senator Cory Booker’s potential presidential run in 2028. In the current political atmosphere under President Trump, Hasan emphasized the unpredictability of the news cycle, suggesting it may be too early for speculation on future elections.
During an interview on NewsNation’s “On Balance,” host Leland Vittert questioned Hasan as to whether the excitement surrounding Booker, particularly following his record-breaking Senate floor speech lasting over 25 hours, was premature.
“Probably,” Hasan acknowledged, while expressing admiration for Booker’s endurance and eloquence. He pointed out that the senator spoke without breaks and referencing notes, showcasing his rhetorical skills. “So, as someone who studies rhetoric, I was very impressed,” he remarked.
However, Hasan cautioned against getting carried away, noting, “We’re not even at 100 days into Trump’s term. Let’s calm down.” He argued that predicting the political climate even a few months ahead is challenging, given how rapidly situations can evolve in contemporary politics.
“Trump years are like dog years,” Hasan noted, implying that the pace of political change is accelerated. He stressed that assumptions about the political landscape in just a few months or even years down the line are often misguided.
This discussion comes as the Democratic Party reevaluates its strategy following a disappointing performance in the 2024 elections. With criticism arising over its lack of a robust response to Trump’s aggressive policy initiatives, some members, including Booker, are exploring unique approaches to advocate for resistance.
Despite his reservations about immediate prospects, Hasan anticipates that Booker will emerge as a candidate for the 2028 election. However, he urged the Democratic Party to focus on confronting the current challenges posed by Trump’s administration. “It is the $64,000 question,” Hasan commented when discussing the search for effective leadership within the party, noting that various factions are positioning potential candidates, including centrists and progressives.
Nevertheless, he concluded, “The 2028 runners and riders are irrelevant in the here and now. At this moment, Donald Trump is undermining democratic foundations, reshaping laws, vilifying judges, disrupting foreign alliances, and straining the economy. Addressing these issues requires a Democratic Party that is resolute in its fight.”
