Melania Trump is set to visit Capitol Hill on Monday for a roundtable event with congressional members focused on a significant legislative initiative aimed at addressing the issue of non-consensual intimate imagery, commonly referred to as “revenge porn.”
This will mark her first independent public appearance since she resumed her duties as first lady on January 20.
The legislation in question, known as the “Take It Down Act,” was introduced by Senators Ted Cruz, a Republican from Texas, and Amy Klobuchar, a Democrat from Minnesota. The Senate passed this bill in February. Melania Trump’s endorsement of this legislation could play a crucial role in advancing it through the House of Representatives, which is currently under Republican control, potentially leading it to President Donald Trump‘s desk for approval.
Senator Cruz will be among the attendees at the Capitol’s Mansfield Room, where online safety advocates and survivors of non-consensual imagery have also been invited to participate in the discussion.
During her tenure in the previous Trump administration, Melania Trump spearheaded a youth program called “Be Best,” which emphasized the importance of online safety. She has expressed an interest in reinstating this initiative.
Since assuming her role as first lady again, Melania Trump has made limited public appearances.
She previously accompanied the president on visits to assess natural disaster areas in North Carolina and California shortly after the inauguration and participated in a formal dinner with the nation’s governors at the White House on February 22.
Melania Trump is anticipated to return to the Capitol on Tuesday for the president’s address to a joint session of Congress.
