Meta and Pinterest Support Foundation to Enhance Internet Safety Following Molly Russell’s Tragic Death

Meta and Pinterest have reportedly contributed funds to a foundation created in the memory of Molly Russell.

Molly, just 14 years old, took her own life in 2017 after encountering harmful material online.

The Molly Rose Foundation, which incorporates Molly’s middle name, strives to enhance internet safety protections for young users.

Hailing from Harrow, north-west London, Molly had engaged with content linked to suicide and self-harm across several online platforms prior to her tragic death in November 2017.

Her story underscored the risks faced by youth in the digital environment and generated significant advocacy for improved online safety regulations.

The latest report from the foundation acknowledges financial support from anonymous donors, which has been kept confidential at their request.

Reports from the BBC indicate that the donations from Meta and Pinterest began in 2024, with anticipated ongoing support for the foreseeable future. However, the specific financial contributions have not been revealed.

It has been clarified that the Russell family has not received any funds from these donations, as reported by the broadcaster.

These contributions emerge amid rising global scrutiny regarding the effects of social media on the mental well-being of children.

Earlier this January, Meta’s CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced a shift in company policy that would limit proactive scanning for harmful content in certain instances, citing a desire to promote free speech and minimize perceived censorship. The company will now depend on users to report inappropriate content.

The Molly Rose Foundation has cautioned that such policy changes by Meta could potentially elevate the risks for young users facing harmful content online.

Despite the challenges, Molly’s family has affirmed that they will not seek legal action against Meta or Pinterest, choosing instead to focus on collaborative efforts through the foundation.

Legal representatives for the family expressed their commitment to advancing shared goals with the social media platforms. In a statement, they said, “Following the coroner’s inquest into Molly’s death, we have decided that we will pursue the aims we share with Meta and Pinterest through the Molly Rose Foundation to help ensure young people have a positive experience online, instead of pursuing legal action.”

The family also reiterated their policy against accepting any compensation related to Molly’s death.

In recent months, the charity has bolstered its leadership team by recruiting a CEO, two public policy managers, a head of communications, and a fundraising manager, according to reports.

The foundation has initiated campaigns aimed at urging the government to enhance the Online Safety Act, advocating for increased accountability for tech companies regarding algorithm-driven content.

Ian Russell, Molly’s father, serves as an unpaid trustee of the foundation and remains an active advocate for changes that safeguard young people online.

Meta and Pinterest have been contacted for their perspectives on the matter.
