Meta Unveils HDMI Link App for Enhanced Mixed Reality Experience
Meta has rolled out an innovative application specifically designed for its Quest 3 mixed reality (MR) headset and other compatible devices. The app, named Meta Quest HDMI Link, allows users to connect their headsets to HDMI, USB Type-C, and various other equipment, transforming the headsets into output screens for media consumption and gaming experiences.
This capability was previously available in the original Meta Quest through the Air Link feature; however, the new HDMI Link app enhances this functionality across the latest headset models, including the Meta Quest 2, Quest 3, and Quest Pro. Users can utilize connection ports such as HDMI or DisplayPort to link handheld gaming devices, laptops, and consoles, aiming to provide a 2D virtual reality (VR) experience with minimal delay.

According to a detailed blog post from Meta, the HDMI Link app functions in a manner akin to the Theatre View feature introduced with the recent v67 software update. This allows users to engage in gaming at a resolution of 1080p and a frame rate of 60 frames per second (fps), boasting what Meta describes as “near-zero latency.”
Users have the flexibility to reposition or resize the output screen according to their preferences. Furthermore, the app is compatible with the beta version of the Xbox Cloud Gaming service, allowing gaming enthusiasts to seamlessly engage using the new app along with touch controllers and hand tracking capabilities.
Nonetheless, Meta emphasizes the necessity of a stable Wi-Fi connection for optimal wireless streaming. It’s also important to note that many streaming applications utilize High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection (HDCP) or Digital Rights Management (DRM), which may restrict access to certain content, potentially impacting what users can view or play on their headset.
To fully utilize this feature, users must also possess a USB Video Class (UVC) and USB Audio Class (UAC) compatible 1080p capture card. Meta recommends ensuring that any associated cables meet at least the USB 3.0 standard to guarantee reliable performance.
Currently, the Meta Quest HDMI Link app is accessible through App Lab, indicating that it remains in its developmental stage. Despite this, users are invited to download and explore its features on their headsets today.
