Tragic Killing of Guerrero Mayor Just Days After Taking Office
MEXICO CITY (Reuters) – The newly appointed mayor of Chilpancingo, Alejandro Arcos, was tragically killed just six days after assuming office. The confirmation of his death was provided by Guerrero’s governor.
Governor Evelyn Salgado expressed her grief over the incident, stating, “His loss mourns the entire Guerrero society and fills us with indignation.” The mayor’s assassination highlights the ongoing violence in the region, which has drawn national concern.
Authorities are investigating the murder, with the state attorney general’s office taking the lead. This follows the emergence of disturbing images on the messaging platform WhatsApp, purportedly showing Arcos’s severed head atop a pick-up truck. However, these images have not been independently verified by Reuters.
The violence did not stop with Arcos, as just three days prior, Francisco Tapia, the new secretary of the city government, was also murdered. Senator Alejandro Moreno, head of the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI), lamented the loss of these young officials, describing them as dedicated to the betterment of their community. He urged the federal attorney general’s office to step in to investigate the circumstances surrounding both killings amidst the increasing lawlessness in Guerrero.
Guerrero has emerged as one of the most perilous states in Mexico for both politicians and journalists, with a notable increase in targeted violence. In the lead-up to the elections on June 2, at least six candidates for public office were reported killed in the state.
In the days leading up to his death, Arcos had actively engaged with his community, overseeing disaster relief efforts in the wake of Hurricane John. This natural disaster had caused significant flooding in Acapulco and nearby areas, further complicating the region’s challenges.
