Miami Vice Set for a Big-Screen Revival
Detectives Crockett and Tubbs are poised for a fresh interpretation as the iconic 80s television series Miami Vice gears up for a cinematic return.
Joseph Kosinski, renowned for his direction of Top Gun: Maverick, has been appointed as the director for this new adaptation of the series, which originally aired on NBC. The show chronicled the lives of two undercover detectives battling the illegal drug trade in vibrant Miami.
The screenplay will be crafted by Dan Gilroy, an Oscar-nominated writer known for his work on films like Nightcrawler, The Bourne Legacy, and Kong: Skull Island. Recently, he has also contributed to the critically acclaimed Star Wars series, Andor.
Originally airing from 1984 to 1990, the show starred Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas. Michael Mann, an influential figure in the industry, served as the executive producer and later attempted to bring the series back to life on the big screen, featuring Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx in lead roles.
The 2006 film adaptation grossed $164 million globally against a budget of $135 million. While the initial reception was mixed, over time, the film garnered more favorable re-evaluations. The Guardian’s Peter Bradshaw noted its “operatic and grandiose” nature, praising it for being “gripping and exhilarating in a way no other filmmaker could manage.”
However, Farrell expressed his reservations about the film during an interview with Total Film, stating, “I didn’t like it so much – I thought it was style over substance and I accept a good bit of the responsibility. It was never going to be Lethal Weapon, but I think we missed an opportunity to have a friendship that also had some elements of fun.”
Kosinski’s directorial journey began with 2010’s Tron: Legacy, followed by the sci-fi epic Oblivion and the firefighter drama Only the Brave. His recent success with Top Gun: Maverick, which grossed $1.4 billion worldwide, has solidified his status in Hollywood.
This summer, audiences can look forward to Kosinski’s action drama featuring Brad Pitt, centered around Formula 1 racing. Additionally, he is connected to an upcoming UFO conspiracy thriller that will be produced for Apple.
