Microsoft Introduces AI Recall Feature for Windows Insiders

Microsoft is launching a preview of its innovative AI-powered Recall feature exclusively for Windows Insiders using Copilot Plus PCs. This functionality enables users to retrace their digital activities by capturing screenshots of their on-screen actions.

The Recall feature, which was first revealed in May, allows users to easily access their previous work by utilizing an AI system that interprets natural language queries to locate relevant visuals. Alongside Recall, Microsoft is also introducing Click to Do, a tool that competes with the Circle to Search functionality.

Windows Insiders in the Dev Channel with compatible Copilot Plus devices can begin previewing this feature today. Recall operates by taking automatic screenshots across various applications and websites, creating a comprehensive timeline that users can navigate to find specific files or webpages they accessed on particular dates.

Security Enhancements and Privacy Protocols

This feature has experienced multiple delays since its original announcement as Microsoft worked diligently to address potential security vulnerabilities, particularly the risk of data breaches involving sensitive information such as passwords and credit card numbers. Recent updates indicate that Microsoft has made significant strides in enhancing security measures.

Importantly, all screenshots captured by the Recall feature remain on the user’s device and are not transmitted to Microsoft or third parties. Microsoft has clarified:

We do not send your snapshots off your PC to Microsoft or third parties, and don’t use them for training purposes. Microsoft can’t access the keys to view your encrypted data, so we can’t restore your snapshots if you remove Windows Hello or reset your PC.

Additionally, Recall is designed to detect sensitive information on the screen, automatically ceasing to capture images if necessary. Users will have full control over managing and deleting their screenshots, with the option to prevent the tool from activating in specific applications or websites.

Optional Feature Requiring Security Measures

Recall will be an optional feature, meaning users must opt-in and enable it to benefit from its functions. It also requires Windows Hello for identity verification and necessitates that BitLocker and Secure Boot are already set up on the Copilot Plus devices.

Enhancing Productivity with Click to Do

Complementing Recall, Click to Do will be available in this preview and is designed to enhance productivity by recognizing text and images within Recall snapshots. This integration allows the AI to suggest effective applications for various tasks based on the recognized content.

Looking ahead, Microsoft intends to update Click to Do, enabling it to function independently of Recall. Users will be able to activate Click to Do by pressing the Windows key in combination with a left-click, bringing up an interactive overlay for easier navigation and action initiation, including searches on platforms such as Bing and functionality with YouTube videos.

Currently, both Recall and Click to Do are exclusively available on Snapdragon-equipped Copilot Plus PCs. However, Microsoft has signaled plans to broaden support to include Intel and AMD-powered Copilot Plus devices in the near future.
