Microsoft has officially declined a proposal for a crossover between two of its iconic franchises, Halo and Doom, that would feature Master Chief alongside the Doom Slayer in the animated series Secret Level. This decision has left fans feeling disappointed, underscoring ongoing challenges within the publisher’s management of its intellectual properties.

Though the first season of Secret Level received mixed reviews, it managed to produce several episodes that effectively celebrated various gaming titles. From Sifu to Spelunky and Warhammer to Exodus, the series featured a range of animations that resonated with audiences and reignited interest in these games. With a second season confirmed, there remains hope that more beloved franchises might receive similar attention to appease enthusiastic fans.

The missed opportunity for a Halo and Doom crossover was revealed by Tim Miller, the creator of Secret Level, and producer Dave Wilson. Despite their high hopes for this collaboration, it was met with a firm rejection from Microsoft.

Microsoft said no to Halo & Doom crossover in Secret Level

In contrast to PlayStation’s recent lackluster crossover attempt featuring Kratos and Helldivers, the proposed Xbox crossover was seen as a more bold and ambitious initiative.

Wilson shared insights on the pitch during a discussion with Collider, expressing a desire to create something innovative and distinct within the gaming landscape. “We wanted to make a Master Chief / Doom Slayer crossover episode, and I spent a whole weekend crafting this impassioned letter of my childhood. They were like, ‘Nah,’” Wilson noted.

The crossover could have brought together two of Microsoft’s most prominent characters in a unique way, but it seems corporate priorities overshadowed this creative venture. At the time of the proposal, there was a heightened focus on existing IPs that were experiencing significant developments, such as the Halo series, which was in the early stages of collaboration with Paramount.

Wilson expressed frustration with public perceptions of the decision, emphasizing that there were discussions regarding numerous franchises during their creative planning process.

Microsoft can’t get out of its own way

The rejection of the crossover is emblematic of Microsoft’s broader struggles with its strategic direction, especially following the significant acquisition of Activision Blizzard King for $68.7 billion. The move has not led to the anticipated boost in positivity surrounding the Xbox brand.

Consideration of the Call of Duty franchise, a key aspect of the acquisition, highlights Microsoft’s indecision about its future direction. Questions have arisen regarding whether titles should be included in Game Pass or what their availability will be at launch.

This uncertainty has created frustration among fans, who frequently encounter mixed messages regarding Xbox’s strategy. The situation is further complicated by projects like Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, which has already been marketed for platforms beyond Xbox before its release.

As Microsoft navigates these turbulent waters, it appears that its decision-making has not aligned with the best interests of strengthening its competitive position or fostering deeper connections with its fanbase.
