New Sitcom “Mid-Century Modern” Takes a Fresh Approach to Friendship and Aging
The highly anticipated sitcom “Mid-Century Modern” features a star-studded cast, including Nathan Lane, Matt Bomer, and Nathan Lee Graham. Dubbed the “Gay Golden Girls,” the show chronicles the lives of three close friends residing in Palm Springs, alongside the mother of Lane’s character, portrayed by the late Linda Lavin.
While the series evokes nostalgia for classic sitcoms, it also confronts pertinent issues such as politics, familial conflicts, and the challenges of aging. The creative minds behind “Mid-Century Modern” are Max Mutchnick and David Kohan, previously known for their successful series “Will & Grace.”
“Working with Hulu gives us a lot more artistic freedom compared to traditional network shows,” Lane shared in a recent interview with BroadwayWorld. “The content is much more daring, with R-rated situations and language.” He also mentioned that iconic sitcom creator Norman Lear remains an inspirational figure for Mutchnick.
The show incorporates several references to Broadway musicals, including a notable cold open that humorously parodies the “Cell Block Tango” from “Chicago.” During the conversation, the cast playfully speculated about their characters’ musical preferences. Graham mused, “[Arthur’s favorite] would have to oscillate between ‘Dreamgirls’ and ‘Sweeney Todd’ because my life’s just that traumatic sometimes.” For the full insights from Lane and Bomer, viewers can catch the complete interview. Currently, all ten episodes are available for streaming on Hulu.
The principal cast includes Nathan Lane as Bunny Schneiderman, Matt Bomer as Jerry Frank, Nathan Lee Graham as Arthur Broussard, and Linda Lavin as Bunny’s mother, Sybil Schneiderman. The show is bolstered by appearances from several Broadway veterans, such as Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Richard Kind, and Judd Hirsch, alongside a diverse lineup of talent including Pamela Adlon, Vanessa Bayer, Kimberly Coles, Stephanie Koenig, Billie Lourd, Esther Moon Wu, Jaime Moyer, Cheri Oteri, Rhea Perlman, and Zane Phillips.
“Mid-Century Modern” is produced by executive producers Max Mutchnick & David Kohan, with Ryan Murphy also serving as an executive producer. Lane and Bomer contribute as executive producers alongside the legendary director James Burrows. The series is produced by 20th Television.
