Sen. Mike Lee Advocates for Abolishing the TSA

Senator Mike Lee is once again vocalizing his stance on the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), advocating for its abolition. In a recent message shared on social media platform X, he argued, “Tired of being groped every time you travel? Abolish TSA.” Lee went further, calling for airport security to be “Free Of Sexual Assault Again.”

During a Senate Energy and Natural Resources confirmation hearing on January 15, 2025, for President Donald Trump’s nominee for Secretary of Energy, Chris Wright, Lee reiterated his proposal. He suggested that the responsibility of passenger screening could be shifted to the airlines themselves.

According to the TSA’s official communications, the agency’s procedures involve pat-downs as a part of random security measures when screening technology alarms. Such measures might involve inspection of various body parts, including sensitive areas, which has been a point of contention for many travelers.

The TSA was established following the tragic events of September 11, 2001, specifically due to the urgent need for improved airport security. The Aviation and Transportation Security Act was signed into law on November 19, 2001, giving rise to the TSA as a federal agency.

Lee’s arguments against the TSA are not new; he has been an advocate for its dissolution since at least the previous year. He expressed that airlines could better secure their own operations without the oversight of a federal agency, arguing this would result in enhanced respect for passengers and fewer invasive screenings.

Following his previous statements, Lee experienced a TSA pat-down, leading him to question the agency’s practices further. He shared this experience on March 14, 2024, stating, “Update: days after calling to abolish TSA, I got ‘randomly selected’ for the needlessly slow, thorough TSA screening & patdown. Maybe it’s a coincidence. Or not.” He connected his experience to concerns over the effectiveness of federal management in airport security.

In December, he also circulated a video depicting a man undergoing a TSA pat-down, emphasizing the invasive nature of such searches. Lee urged followers to share the video if they supported the abolition of the TSA, reflecting a growing sentiment among several travelers who feel uncomfortable or disrespected by current airport security protocols.

As discussions continue around the role of federal agencies in airport security, Lee’s push to dismantle the TSA brings attention to broader issues of privacy and personal agency in the security process faced by travelers today.
