Mikel Arteta has called on his Arsenal squad to “achieve something remarkable in Paris” following their 1-0 defeat in the first leg of the Champions League semi-final at home. The team struggled in that match, conceding early and missing several key opportunities to equalize. Despite the setback, Arteta highlighted the minute details that could influence the outcome of the tie, pushing for a more robust performance in the upcoming match next Wednesday.
“While I can’t quantify it, we have a solid chance to reach the final,” Arteta stated. “The crucial moment will be in Paris. We’re only halfway through. My message remains consistent, akin to our 3-0 victory over Real Madrid at home. We must approach Paris with a winning mindset, as we are fully capable. Both teams are closely matched, and even small differences can sway the result.”
Arteta acknowledged the need for improvement, remarking that the match was competitive and could have gone either way. “We must tilt the balance in our favor. Our accuracy needs refinement, but we are eager to advance and accomplish what is necessary in Paris. Triumphing in the Champions League requires extraordinary effort, and that is exactly what we must deliver in the next game.”
The manager also mentioned a tactical adjustment made after 20 minutes that helped to stabilize Arsenal’s performance after a strong start from Paris Saint-Germain. However, he chose to keep the specifics of the change under wraps.
“There was a challenge with the ball,” he explained, “and if not rectified, it compels the midfield to retreat. It was an essential adjustment that we managed to implement. In the Champions League, nuances like these can be decisive.”
PSG’s manager, Luis Enrique, echoed a similar sentiment regarding the match’s outcome. He expressed satisfaction with the victory but cautioned that more challenges lay ahead. “The mission for tonight has been successful, yet we could have easily settled for a draw, and that would have been acceptable too,” he noted.
“Against Arsenal, we must remain vigilant and avoid complacency. No one should assume victory is guaranteed as we face a team that has everything to gain.”
