Investigation into Miller Gardner’s Death Reveals Possible Carbon Monoxide Poisoning

Costa Rican officials have provided new insights into the circumstances surrounding the tragic death of Miller Gardner, the 14-year-old son of former New York Yankees player Brett Gardner. During a press conference, Randall Zúñiga, General Director of the Costa Rican Judicial Investigative Agency (OIJ), informed the media that “high levels of carbon monoxide contamination” were detected in the Gardner family’s hotel room, which may have contributed to the boy’s untimely demise.

Zúñiga elaborated that there is a specialized machine room adjacent to the family’s accommodations, from which contamination might have spread, potentially leading to the incident. He stated, “It’s also important to note that next to [the family’s] room there is a specialized machine room, from which it is believed some form of contamination may have reached the guest rooms, potentially causing the incident,” as reported by the New York Post.

Authorities have notified the local fire department and the Ministry of Health to address the confirmed contamination issue. They are also collaborating with the FBI in the United States as they await forensic toxicology results to gain further clarity on the case.

The Gardner family was on vacation in Costa Rica when they faced this devastating loss. In a statement released through the Yankees, they shared, “We have so many questions and so few answers at this point, but we do know that he passed away peacefully in his sleep on the morning of Friday, March 21st.” They also noted that other family members experienced illness during the trip.

Initially, reports suggested that Miller may have succumbed to asphyxiation as a result of food poisoning, but this theory has been reconsidered in light of the new evidence regarding carbon monoxide levels.

The family was staying at the Arenas Del Mar hotel in Manuel Antonio, and had dined at a nearby Italian restaurant the day prior. By 11 p.m. local time, all four family members reported feeling unwell, prompting the hotel to call a doctor for assistance with their symptoms. Tragically, the following morning, Miller was discovered unresponsive with traces of vomit, indicating a serious health crisis.

In their ongoing investigation, officials have spoken with the doctor who treated the family, as well as staff from both the hotel and the restaurant, and are examining security footage to gather more information about the events leading up to Miller’s death.

The Gardner family also issued an obituary reflecting on Miller’s life and announcing funeral arrangements. The notice, published in the Charleston Post and Courier, commemorated him, stating, “The void Miller’s passing leaves in the hearts of his family, friends, teammates, teachers, coaches and others will be felt for years.” It continued, “The Gardner family will forever cherish the places they visited, the people they met, the friends they made, and the memories they created together.”

During a recent baseball game marking the start of the season, a moment of silence was held to honor Miller Gardner, emphasizing the profound impact of his brief life on those around him.

Brett Gardner, who played for the New York Yankees from 2008 until 2021, was part of the team that secured its last World Series title in 2009. He had notable relationships with baseball icons such as Derek Jeter, Alex Rodriguez, and Aaron Judge throughout his career.
