Mina Starsiak Hawk Reflects on the End of Good Bones
Mina Starsiak Hawk has opened up about her feelings regarding the conclusion of the HGTV series Good Bones, where she and her mother, Karen E. Laine, undertook home renovations in their hometown of Indianapolis, Indiana. Despite some family tensions, Mina expressed a clear sense of nostalgia for the show during a recent discussion on her Instagram Stories.
In a candid post shared on October 13, she noted, “I grew up making Good Bones. I started in my 20s. I turn 40 this year. Most of my adult life was spent making the show.” Her reflections highlighted both the personal and professional significance of the series in her life.
Mina reminisced about the various elements that made the show special to her: “I miss the real work. The fun. The pranks. The amazing relationships. The experiences I got to have that I never would have had if not for the show. 100% I miss it.”
However, her acknowledgment of the show’s impact comes against a backdrop of family strife. In August 2023, shortly after confirming that Good Bones would conclude after its eighth season, she mentioned on her podcast Mina AF that her relationship with her mother and brother, Tad Starsiak, had become strained. “No one’s punching the other person in the face by any means,” she explained, emphasizing that their interactions were primarily for the sake of her father’s happiness. Yet, this dynamic was no longer satisfactory for her.
In a subsequent podcast episode in October, Mina revealed the extent of the rift, stating that she had not spoken to her mother for a year. “I don’t know a way forward, which is really frustrating because I want to know a way,” she remarked, acknowledging the complexities and emotional layers involved in their familial relationships.
By December, she indicated that her relationship challenges extended beyond her immediate family, sharing that she was also “not on speaking terms” with Cory Miller, a contractor and costar from Good Bones.
Though both Mina and Karen participated in the recent limited series revival titled Good Bones: New Beginnings, their onscreen presence did not overlap, and the series notably avoided delving into their personal disputes. This decision reflects a delicate balance between professional collaboration and personal struggles, leaving fans of the show to wonder about the future of their relationship off-camera.
