Mindy Kaling Discusses Experience Filming With Love, Meghan Amid Social Media Buzz
Mindy Kaling recently shared her thoughts on the public reaction to her appearance in Meghan Markle’s new Netflix series, With Love, Meghan. The creator of The Sex Lives of College Girls, 45, appeared on The View to discuss her latest project, Running Point. During the conversation, co-host Alyssa Farrah Griffin inquired about Kaling’s experience working with Meghan, 43, on the cooking and lifestyle series.
“You know, I had a great time,” Kaling stated, while acknowledging the social media conversations that arose from their interactions, particularly one concerning Meghan’s last name.
“I noticed that whenever I do something, anything related to Meghan, it becomes like…,” she paused to collect her thoughts.
“Big news,” added co-host Whoopi Goldberg, to which Kaling agreed.
The discussion shed light on how social media users scrutinized Kaling’s reactions in a segment where Meghan noted her preference for the surname “Sussex” over “Markle.” Some online commenters accused Meghan of being “incredibly rude” towards Kaling during the show.
“We were making sandwiches, and they’ll zoom in on my face on TikTok, analyzing my emotions, but honestly, I didn’t even remember it because we filmed that, like, nine months ago,” Kaling explained.
Despite the speculation surrounding the incident, Kaling expressed her admiration for Meghan. “I loved my time with Meghan,” she affirmed.
As she pivoted back to her own Netflix series, Running Point, which features Kate Hudson, Kaling remarked, “I’m also like, let her promote her show; I’m here to talk about Running Point!”
She reflected on the broader reactions to Meghan, stating, “It’s fascinating seeing… the reaction to her.”
Previously, during the Golden Globes red carpet, Kaling had opened up about her experience filming With Love, Meghan. She recalled being approached by Meghan shortly after her baby was born, when Meghan texted her asking, “Do you want to be on my show?”
A noteworthy highlight of filming with Meghan for Kaling was the culinary experience. “When you hang out with Meghan, you know the food is going to be good. So it’s just nice for somebody else to be cooking for me,” Kaling shared.
In the series, during its second episode, the Duchess revealed her decision to no longer use “Markle” as her surname, expressing her desire to share a last name with her children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet.
