Search Intensifies for Missing Broadway Performer Zelig Williams
Authorities in South Carolina are urgently searching for Zelig Williams, a 28-year-old Broadway performer hailing from Columbia, who has not been seen since Thursday, October 3rd. Williams, who has gained recognition for his performances in productions such as Hamilton and MJ the Musical, was last noted leaving his home in Columbia on that day. His family reported him missing the following morning, as confirmed by the Richland County Sheriff’s Department.
Concerns escalated among family members when he did not return, a scenario considered “out of character” for the performer. Christine Barber, his aunt, mentioned that in his last conversation with his mother, he failed to mention his destination, which is unusual for the close-knit family. “They’re incredibly close, like two peas in a pod,” Barber remarked. “The fact that he didn’t say where he was going is very alarming.”
Shortly after Williams left home, his family received an SOS alert from his phone about ten minutes later, which further ignited their worries. People Magazine reported that the alert, which was traced through a friend in New York, hinted at a potential vehicle accident. However, subsequent searches revealed no signs of a crash.
On October 4th, Williams’ vehicle was found parked near the Palmetto Trail at the intersection of Bluff Road and McCords Ferry. Despite the recovery of his car, Williams himself remains unaccounted for. “This is not typical behavior for Zelig,” emphasized Jay Weaver, the Public Information Officer for the Richland County Sheriff’s Department, noting the critical aspect that Williams needs medication, which heightens the urgency of locating him.
In a recent statement to People Magazine, Sheriff Leon Lott noted that the circumstances surrounding Williams’ disappearance may suggest foul play, though the case is still classified as a missing persons investigation.
Williams has built a promising career on Broadway since his debut in Hamilton in 2016 and shared the stage with Hugh Jackman during a 2019 world tour. His recent role in MJ the Musical was complemented by his commitment to community engagement, as he was in the midst of planning Broadway boot camps designed to inspire and educate local youth.
The family continues to hold onto hope and is appealing for the public’s assistance in locating him. “We love him, and we just want him home,” Barber urged. “If anyone sees him or has any information about his whereabouts, please reach out to the authorities.”
Anyone with relevant information is encouraged to contact the Richland County Sheriff’s Department at (803) 576-3000 or SC Crime Stoppers at 888-CRIME-SC (888-274-6372).
