Mitch McConnell to Depart from Senate After Current Term

On the occasion of his 83rd birthday, former Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell announced that he will not seek reelection in 2026, marking the conclusion of his long tenure in the Senate. During a speech on the Senate floor, McConnell revealed that he had made this decision about a year ago.

Reflecting on his time in office, McConnell stated, “Seven times, my fellow Kentuckians have sent me to the Senate. Every day in between, I’ve been humbled by the trust they’ve placed in me to do their business right here. Representing our commonwealth has been the honor of a lifetime. I will not seek this honor an eighth time. My current term in the Senate will be my last.”

Having served as a U.S. senator from Kentucky since 1985, McConnell’s retirement had been anticipated. He notably stepped down from his leadership position last year after a lengthy period as Senate Republican leader from 2007 to 2025, distinguishing himself as the longest-serving party leader in Senate history. His tenure included a term as majority leader from 2015 to 2021.

The decision for McConnell to retire comes amid ongoing health challenges. The senator, a survivor of polio, has faced various health issues in recent years, including episodes of freezing and instances of falling. Reports from those close to him indicate a resurgence of polio-related symptoms often seen in older individuals who survived the disease. Recently, he has been utilizing a wheelchair following a fall at the U.S. Capitol.
