Rafael Devers Contemplates Position Change Amid Boston Red Sox Transition
Rafael Devers of the Boston Red Sox has stirred discussions regarding his position within the team as spring training unfolds. His reluctance to relinquish third base to new teammate Alex Bregman, who has superior defensive metrics, has been a focal point of conversation among fans and analysts since Bregman was signed to a lucrative three-year contract worth $120 million.
Manager Alex Cora has made it clear that he will prioritize the best interests of the Red Sox as the season approaches. Recent comments from Cora indicate that Devers is unlikely to see time at third base before the end of spring training, suggesting that he may transition into the role of the full-time designated hitter starting on Opening Day.

After a successful game where Devers scored following a two-run homer against the Kansas City Royals on July 14, 2024, in Boston, discussions about his role intensified. Cora stated during a press conference that “Devers would probably not” play at third base as spring training wraps up, thereby solidifying Bregman’s position in the infield.
In a previous statement, Devers expressed his desire to maintain his role at third base. “Third base is my position. That’s what I’ve played. I don’t know what their plans are,” he conveyed through an interpreter last month, highlighting his aspirations while acknowledging a conversation with team management regarding his position.
Despite his initial firm stance, Devers later adopted a more accommodating approach, emphasizing his readiness to contribute in whatever capacity the team deemed necessary. “I’m good to do whatever they want me to do,” he clarified, reinforcing his commitment to the team’s goals. “I’ve already spoken to them about that, and they know where I stand. I’m just ready to play.”
Recognized as a three-time All-Star third baseman, Devers has faced some scrutiny regarding his defensive performance, recording minus-six outs above average, in contrast to Bregman’s six outs. Although Devers insists he works diligently on his fielding skills, the signing of Bregman has largely indicated a shift in roles for Devers.
Adding to the conversation around positions, first baseman Triston Casas expressed support for Devers, suggesting that third base should remain his territory and proposing that Bregman might fulfill a role at second base instead, which currently lacks a clear starter.
The Red Sox organization’s intentions for the upcoming 2025 season are becoming clearer as they aim for a postseason appearance after missing out in 2024. It appears that Bregman will continue his preparations at third base throughout spring training, with no indications of him shifting to second base thus far.
As the Red Sox continue to prepare for the season, Devers’ adaptability and the team’s strategies will be closely monitored by fans and pundits alike.
