Moeen Ali Anticipates Positive Impact from McCullum’s Coaching on Jos Buttler
Moeen Ali expresses confidence that Brendon McCullum’s dynamic coaching style will elevate Jos Buttler’s leadership as England’s white-ball captain. Following McCullum’s appointment as head coach, Ali believes that the New Zealander’s aggressive philosophy, akin to his renowned ‘Bazball’ approach, will be beneficial for the team’s performance.
McCullum’s transition to lead the white-ball setup comes after his successful two-year stint with the England Test team, following Matthew Mott’s departure in July. His experience as a formidable player who excelled in both formats only adds to the anticipation surrounding his coaching tenure.
“Brendon has a unique energy and insight from his playing days,” Moeen told Sky Sports. “It makes a difference when a coach has firsthand experience,” he added, noting the potential for McCullum to alleviate some of the pressures Buttler faces in his multifaceted role as a captain, batter, and wicketkeeper.
Moeen retired from international cricket after being omitted from the squad for the upcoming series against Australia, which features three T20s and five ODIs. During his career, he earned 138 ODI and 92 T20I caps, contributing significantly with both bat and ball. He also served as Buttler’s vice-captain after Buttler succeeded Eoin Morgan as captain.
Moeen highlighted the importance of nurturing future leaders within the team, stating that strong captains inspire others to step up. “I believe that over time, Jos will foster leadership qualities in his teammates. It’s essential for a captain to create an environment where others feel empowered to lead,” he noted.
Trescothick: McCullum’s Influence Extends Across Formats
Former England opener Marcus Trescothick echoed Moeen’s sentiments, asserting that both the Test and white-ball sides will reap benefits from McCullum’s dual role. He emphasized the positive impact McCullum has already made with the Test squad and expressed confidence that extending his leadership to limited-overs cricket will yield similar results.

Trescothick mentioned that he and other coaching staff had encouraged McCullum to accept the role. He believes McCullum’s appointment will create a unified approach across both formats of the game. “We are keen to instill a consistent message and style of play similar to what we’ve been developing with the Test team,” he said.
