From experiencing profound challenges to becoming a beacon of hope for others on their recovery journey, Zach Drew stands out as the founder of Level Up and an ongoing care manager with Teen Challenge Saskatchewan.
Drew, who marks a decade of sobriety this coming April, attributes much of his recovery to the discipline of fitness and its positive impact on his mental health.
“Hitting rock bottom is often where transformation begins. If you find yourself at your lowest, I assure you that there are numerous invaluable services and programs available in Saskatoon, supported by incredible individuals ready to assist you; all you have to do is reach out,” Drew emphasized. “My advice to others is simple: don’t hesitate to seek help. Our city is filled with resources.”
Since turning his life around, Drew is dedicated to giving back, especially to those on their own fitness and recovery paths. His non-profit organization, Level Up, aims to eliminate financial barriers associated with fitness, allowing greater access for individuals in need. The 12-week program provides participants with complimentary fitness resources designed to promote overall well-being.
“We target individuals who may struggle to afford gym memberships—often low-income individuals or those who have never set foot in a gym. We provide everything free of charge: personal trainers, nutrition coaching, gym memberships, supplements, workout apparel, and essential gear. Our goal is to equip them with the tools necessary for a healthier lifestyle,” Drew explained.
Drew attributes the success of Level Up to the generous contributions from local businesses, including partnerships with Rise Strength Lab, Supplement World, Lululemon, which donates gift cards for workout clothing, and Ivy Yoga House Ltd. Nominations for the upcoming session of Level Up are currently being accepted, with the second round kicking off in early April. Interested individuals can visit levelupcommunities.ca to nominate themselves or someone they know.
“Reflecting on my own journey, I recall receiving unconditional support from those around me who genuinely believed in my potential. Their encouragement was life-changing, and now I feel a profound responsibility to extend that same support to others,” Drew stated.
