Edoardo Mortara Set to Return to DTM in 2025
Edoardo Mortara is gearing up for a comeback in the Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters (DTM) in 2025, marking his return to the series after a six-year absence. Sources from Autosport indicate that the Swiss racer will likely join reigning DTM champion Mirko Bortolotti at Abt Sportsline, following the team’s recent transition from Audi to Lamborghini racing vehicles.
The announcement from Lamborghini confirms that Mortara is expected to “join a GT3 programme with Lamborghini in the remaining year of 2025.” This decision comes after Mortara joined Lamborghini as a factory driver in 2024 to compete in the World Endurance Championship with their new SC63 LMDh prototype. However, Lamborghini’s involvement in the Hypercar class concluded after just one season, leaving Mortara without a permanent prototype opportunity.
Although Mortara was registered for the recent Daytona 24 Hours, he will not be part of Lamborghini’s roster for the remainder of its IMSA SportsCar Championship endurance schedule. The upcoming GT3 programme mentioned for Mortara appears to be integrated into the DTM series, where Bortolotti triumphed in 2024 while driving a factory-supported SSR Performance entry.
It is anticipated that SSR Performance will not continue in the DTM for the 2025 season, which positions Abt as the most likely team for Mortara’s return to the series. The driver has a noteworthy history with Abt, having raced with the Audi factory team for three seasons from 2014 to 2016, achieving runner-up status in the championship during his final season with them.
Another potential candidate for the vacant seat at Abt is Jordan Pepper. Pepper made his DTM debut last year at the Sachsenring, stepping in for Grasser Racing’s Christian Engelhart. However, reports suggest that Mortara is poised to secure the seat instead of Pepper.
Mortara’s DTM career spans eight seasons, where he initially raced for Audi teams, including Rosberg and Abt, before his final two years with Mercedes during its last stint in the series with the Class One-spec C63 AMG. Throughout his DTM journey, Mortara has achieved an impressive record of 10 race wins, 27 podium finishes, and five pole positions.
