Elon Musk’s Influence on British Politics Draws Criticism from Voters
A recent Opinium poll commissioned by the Observer indicates that a significant majority of voters perceive Elon Musk’s involvement in British politics as detrimental. Following Musk’s pointed criticisms of Keir Starmer, the leader of the Labour Party, and former UKIP leader Nigel Farage, 53% of respondents expressed negative views about his impact, while only 12% saw it in a positive light.
Over the past week, the billionaire entrepreneur has taken to his social media platform X to vehemently oppose Starmer and the Labour government’s stance regarding additional national inquiries into grooming gangs. Musk went so far as to label Jess Phillips, the safeguarding minister, as a “rape genocide apologist” and accused Starmer of complicity in mass rapes for political gain. Additionally, he publicly criticized Farage, suggesting he is not fit to lead Reform UK at a time when Musk is rumored to be considering a large donation to the party.
In a provocative post on X, Musk even posed the question of whether the United States should “liberate” the UK from what he described as a “tyrannical government” under Starmer. This dramatic rhetoric was highlighted in a report by the Financial Times, which stated that Musk has been in discussions with allies about strategies to unseat Starmer from office.
Public opinion appears largely unfavorable toward Musk’s approach, particularly regarding his remarks about grooming gangs. In the Opinium research, 47% of participants considered his comments “unhelpful,” while only 26% believed they were constructive. Among supporters of Reform UK, there was considerable discontent regarding Musk’s criticism of Farage, with 71% asserting that the Clacton MP remains the best choice for leadership.
Adam Drummond, head of political and social research at Opinium, noted a broad consensus among the public reflecting a reluctance to accept the intervention of a foreign billionaire in British affairs. Farage himself has publicly disagreed with Musk on certain issues, particularly Musk’s support for controversial activist Tommy Robinson, but insists that their personal relationship has not suffered lasting harm.
The poll also explored public sentiment surrounding potential inquiries into grooming gangs. Voters were divided, with 36% supporting a national inquiry and 28% advocating for localized council investigations while the government works on implementing the recommendations from an independent inquiry related to child sexual abuse reported in 2022.
Drummond explained that while voters may express a desire for inquiries into significant issues, this does not always translate into support for specific policies or actions that may come with substantial costs. His observation highlights the complexity of public opinion when discussing governmental responses to critical social issues.
Despite criticism directed at the current Labour government for its handling of these sensitive topics, the previous Conservative government’s performance received an even less favorable review, with a net approval rating of minus 27%. Current Conservative approaches also faced scrutiny, recording a net approval of minus 11%.
The survey involved 2,050 UK adults and was conducted online between January 8 and 10.
