Georgia Mother’s Indictment Linked to Domestic Incident Amid School Shooting Case of Son
FITZGERALD, Ga. (AP) — Marcee Gray, the mother of a Georgia teenager accused of fatally shooting four individuals at Apalachee High School, has been indicted on charges related to a domestic disturbance from the previous year.
The indictment was announced on Monday, with Gray, 43, facing charges which include exploiting an elderly person in Ben Hill County, as reported by The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. This legal situation appears to be unconnected to the tragic events at Apalachee High School, which took place nearly 200 miles away from where the indictment was issued.
Colt Gray, Marcee’s 14-year-old son, is facing murder charges following his surrender to law enforcement on September 4. Reports indicate that he entered the school with an assault-style rifle concealed in his backpack and opened fire during classes, ultimately resulting in the deaths of two students and two teachers, in addition to injuring nine others.
The indictment against Marcee Gray results from a reported incident involving her elderly mother. According to police documentation, the elderly woman alleged that on November 4, Marcee had seized her phone, bound her to a chair, and left her unattended for a substantial portion of the day.
Following the incident, Marcee Gray allegedly traveled to Barrow County to confront her ex-husband, who cohabited with their son and two additional children. Records illustrate that she was arrested in Barrow County on November 6, with her arrest leading to a plea for charges of criminal trespassing, falsifying a vehicle license plate, and property damage, culminating in a 45-day jail sentence.
Attempts to reach Marcee Gray for comment went unanswered, and it remains unclear whether she has retained legal counsel.
In the aftermath of the shooting at Apalachee High School, Marcee Gray stated that she had contacted the school to alert them of potential trouble after receiving a worrying text from Colt, which simply read, “I’m sorry.” In a subsequent statement, she expressed that her son “is not a monster.”
In addition to Marcee Gray’s legal troubles, her husband, Colin Gray, also faces serious charges including involuntary manslaughter, multiple counts of second-degree murder, and numerous counts of child cruelty, as authorities believe he provided Colt with access to the weapon used during the school shooting.
