Investigation Underway Following Fatal Crash on Route 22 in Monroeville
Authorities in Allegheny County are currently looking into a tragic accident that took place along Route 22, also known as William Penn Highway, in Monroeville. The collision, involving a Nissan Pathfinder and a Toyota RAV4, occurred around midnight in the 3700 block of the highway.
According to police reports, there were two occupants in each vehicle at the time of the crash. Emergency services transported all four individuals to nearby hospitals, but unfortunately, a female passenger in the Pathfinder was later pronounced dead. The remaining three individuals involved in the accident are reported to be in stable condition.

Preliminary findings from the Allegheny County Police Department (ACPD) indicate that both vehicles were traveling westbound when the Pathfinder struck the rear of the RAV4. Local drivers have expressed concerns about the safety of this section of Route 22, noting that high speeds are commonly observed.
“Drivers typically go much faster than the speed limit, which is around 35 miles per hour in this area. If you’re actually adhering to the speed limit, it feels like you’re being overtaken,” commented local driver Thomas Galda.
This stretch of road has a history of serious incidents; in 2017, a motorcyclist lost their life in a similar collision. At that time, it was reported that the motorcyclist crashed while trying to navigate past a vehicle that was leaving a parking lot.

Furthermore, in October 2024, a pedestrian was killed in the same vicinity when struck by a vehicle on the 4000 block of William Penn Highway.

Residents and business owners in the area, such as the manager of the Original Mattress Factory—located near the sites of two previous fatalities—are calling for enhanced safety measures. The manager reported witnessing frequent instances of reckless driving, including drag racing and illegal turns. Their hope is that local authorities will take action to prevent future tragedies.
The Allegheny County Police Department is urging anyone with information regarding the recent fatal accident to reach out to them.
