Memorial Service for Alex Salmond Held in Edinburgh

On a reflective Saturday in Edinburgh, a memorial service was held for former Scottish First Minister Alex Salmond, who passed away unexpectedly at the age of 69 in October. The event was attended by prominent figures, including former Prime Minister Gordon Brown and Scottish First Minister John Swinney, paying respects to a leader who was passionate about Scotland and dedicated to the pursuit of independence.

The ceremony highlighted Salmond’s enduring legacy, with heartfelt tributes from friends and political allies. Kenny MacAskill, a long-time confidant who served as justice secretary under Salmond and later worked alongside him in the Alba party, praised Salmond as a “giant of man” and a “political genius.” MacAskill emphasized Salmond’s unwavering commitment to the cause of Scottish independence, describing it as the “guiding light” of his life. He reminisced about Salmond’s famous declaration that “the dream shall never die,” affirming that the aspirations for independence remain alive.

Among those attending were Salmond’s widow, Moira, as well as notable politicians such as Scottish Labour leader Anas Sarwar, former Labour First Minister Henry McLeish, and Scottish Conservative leader Russell Findlay. These individuals, alongside others from across the political spectrum, underscored Salmond’s significant influence in Scottish politics.

David Davis, once a Conservative Brexit minister and a close friend of Salmond, participated in the readings, further commemorating the former leader’s contributions. Additionally, former SNP minister Fergus Ewing also took part in the service, showcasing a united front in honoring Salmond’s memory.

The event was complemented by musical performances that echoed the sentiments of Scottish pride and independence. Renowned folk singer Dougie MacLean delivered a moving rendition of “Caledonia,” while singer Sheena Wellington led the participants in a heartfelt performance of Robert Burns’ “A Man’s a Man For a’ That.” The Proclaimers, a beloved Scottish duo known for their pro-independence anthems, performed “Cap in Hand,” capturing the spirit of Salmond’s dedication to Scotland with their poignant lyrics. Brothers Craig and Charlie Reid expressed their commitment to championing Salmond’s legacy through their music.

Christina Hendry, a relative of Salmond, shared her memories of him as a “political giant” and a person devoted to his family. She recounted a personal story of Salmond’s compassion and thoughtfulness, even amidst his demanding political career. Hendry reflected on the profound void his absence would leave, not only for the family but for Scotland itself, citing his role in shaping the nation’s voice on the world stage and the broader independence movement.

A private family funeral had been conducted earlier, but the memorial drew around 500 attendees. Despite the significant turnout, it was noted that Salmond’s successor Nicola Sturgeon was not present at the service. This gathering served as a poignant reminder of Alex Salmond’s impact and the legacy he leaves behind as a pivotal figure in the quest for Scotland’s independence.
