In a recent appearance on Dexerto’s Clickbaited show, Jimmy “MrBeast” Donaldson candidly shared an experience that led him to detest his celebrity status as YouTube’s most-followed creator. Despite enjoying tremendous success, with over 360 million subscribers on his main YouTube channel and hosting Amazon Prime’s high-stakes show Beast Games, his rise to fame comes with notable challenges.
MrBeast recounts an incident that made him “hate” being famous
During the interview, Donaldson discussed a taxing airport experience stemming from a lengthy customs line while filming for his popular ‘1 vs. $1’ series, where he and his team contrast various luxury and budget travel options. After two sleepless days and continuous travel for filming, he found himself waiting in line for over two hours, feeling utterly drained.
In a moment of vulnerability, MrBeast recounted how a young admirer—unaware of his fatigue—spotted him and shouted his name, attracting attention from other travelers. “A bunch of people recognized me, and they’re asking for photos,” he reflected, describing the overwhelming nature of the situation.
Feeling trapped in the slow-moving queue, he expressed his frustrations: “In that instance, I was just like, ‘I hate being famous.’” Despite his fame, Donaldson sought a bit of understanding from the airport staff, asking if he could skip ahead, humorously noting, “I don’t mean to have an ego, but this is brutal.”
Unfortunately for him, the TSA agents were unable to offer any special treatment. As a workaround, his assistant stood in line while MrBeast took a moment to breathe in a janitorial closet away from the bustling crowd of fans seeking his attention.
He further revealed the lengths he goes to in order to maintain his privacy; he shared an incident of being followed by a fan while driving, illustrating how he has to tint his car windows illegally to avoid being tracked by overly enthusiastic viewers.
Nevertheless, MrBeast remains optimistic about his interactions with fans. He makes a conscious effort to remember the significance these moments hold for his admirers, many of whom may never meet another celebrity. “I just try to remind myself that, for them, I might be the only ‘celebrity’ — if you’d classify me as one — that they ever meet, and for them, this might be a big deal. …they’re never gonna forget it. I have to put myself in that frame of mind,” he explained.
