MSI Unveils Upgraded Claw Handhelds with Enhanced Features

MSI has introduced two revamped versions of its Claw series after the lukewarm reception of the original model earlier this year. The new Claw 8 AI+ is priced at $900, while the Claw 7 AI+ retails for $800. Both handhelds feature the latest Lunar Lake Intel processors, improved battery life, and refinements in design, including modernized control sticks, bumpers, and triggers.

The initial iteration was criticized for launching “a touch late and a bit too pricey,” as noted by tech reviewer Sam Rutherford from Engadget. He pointed out that its performance fell short against more affordable competitors, the software was cumbersome, and it suffered from frequent optimization updates intended to address a multitude of issues. Although hands-on reviews of the new versions are pending, the switch to Intel’s Core Ultra 7 processor is anticipated to enhance performance and reduce power consumption—two significant drawbacks of the previous model.

The Claw 8 AI+ features an 8-inch display with a resolution of 1,920 x 1,200, while the Claw 7 AI+ offers a 7-inch display at 1,920 x 1,080. Both devices support a 120Hz refresh rate, yet they continue to utilize LCD screens, lacking an OLED option that competitors such as Valve and Lenovo provide.

In terms of power, the Claw 8 is equipped with an 80Wh battery, whereas the Claw 7 houses a 54.5Wh battery. Both models utilize MSI’s Cooler Boost HyperFlow technology, which includes dual fans and heat pipes, claiming to outperform unspecified competitors at a power-efficient 17W.

Another noteworthy feature of these handhelds is the inclusion of two Thunderbolt 4 ports, enabling users to connect the device to external monitors, effectively transforming it into a portable Windows PC. Additionally, they come with CoPilot+ support integrated.

MSI has also made significant adjustments to the joystick, D-pad, bumpers, and triggers of the latest models. While the previous version included Hall effect sticks, the new generation incorporates this technology into the triggers as well. Ergonomics were a highlight of the prior model, and MSI emphasizes that the new designs are specifically tailored to fit the natural contours of the hand.

The mention of AI in the branding presumably pertains to the XeSS upscaling technology embedded in the Intel chip. The former model also featured XeSS, suggesting a marketing strategy aimed at emphasizing the incorporation of AI in the new devices.

The new Claw handhelds are set for release on December 25. As reported by GameRant, pre-order listings are already available, albeit without stock at this time. Upon release, the Claw 7 AI+ will be priced at $800, while the Claw 8 AI+ will be available for $900.

MSI’s renovated Claw series aims to deliver improvements in both performance and battery longevity, positioning itself as a competitive option in the gaming handheld market.
