MSNBC host Lawrence O’Donnell recently addressed alarming polling data that reflects poorly on President Donald Trump, particularly regarding key economic challenges.
“Each day he’s been on the job has resulted in economic setbacks, and he has surrounded himself with an ineffective Cabinet,” O’Donnell remarked. “This has not gone unnoticed by the public—even those who initially supported him are shifting their stance.”
He further drew comparisons to Richard Nixon’s era, noting that while Nixon retained loyal followers after his resignation, Trump’s essential supporters seem to be dwindling, particularly among the swing voters who initially propelled him to victory.
Recent polling trends indicate a significant decline in Trump’s overall approval ratings, plunging five points in just a month according to a recent Fox News poll.
The economic outlook appears even bleaker. O’Donnell highlighted how the economy, once considered Trump’s strongest asset, is no longer a winning argument for him following persistent instability as a result of his trade policies and tariffs.
In fact, the same Fox News survey reported only 38% of respondents approved of his economic management, with a new Reuters/Ipsos poll showing a slightly lower approval of 37%. O’Donnell noted, “This used to be a number that consistently exceeded 50% for him.”
He emphasized that voters who initially bought into Trump’s promises on tariffs are now facing the real costs associated with those policies, leading to disappointment.
As a result, O’Donnell believes Trump’s influence is waning and cautioned that if these unfavorable polling trends continue, Republican lawmakers facing re-election might distance themselves from the President. “They could easily abandon him as they deal with tough campaigns,” he asserted.
