MSPaint, the synth-punk ensemble based in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, is set to release a new EP titled No Separation on May 23, under Convulse. The band is marking their comeback with the single “Angel,” complemented by a music video helmed by director Alex Thiel. The video presents a narrative infused with elements reminiscent of the Matrix, featuring a businessman who becomes overtaken by a mysterious, hooded presence.
“Angel” represents the first new material from MSPaint in two years, following their acclaimed debut album, Post-American, released in 2023. This initial LP showcased contributions from Militarie Gun’s Ian Shelton, who performed on the track “Delete It,” and was co-produced by Shelton alongside Taylor Young. In contrast, No Separation brings on board Julian Cashwan Pratt and Harlan Steel for its production.
Nick Panella, the band’s synthesizer player, shared insights into their creative process: “Much of our music draws from our relationships with one another. We strive to blend different musical perspectives, fostering a community where these variations can flourish. True originality stems from exploring our own internal landscapes and those of the people close to us, culminating in insights that are uniquely ours.”
