Pritam Defends BLACKPINK’s Jennie Against Plagiarism Allegations, Advocates for Supportive Community
Pritam has responded to recent plagiarism allegations directed at BLACKPINK’s Jennie.
In an extensive message shared on Instagram, music composer Pritam expressed his support for K-pop star Jennie amid accusations of copying. He emphasized that similarities in music are commonplace and should not be viewed as deliberate imitation. Pritam called for a collective appreciation of artists’ creations rather than criticism.
In his Instagram update, Pritam referenced Jennie’s new song, “Like Jennie,” noting that the phonetic resemblance of the names ‘Rani’ and ‘Jennie’ does not imply any form of plagiarism.
“The names Rani and Jennie rhyme, so a similar flow doesn’t equate to copying. In music, certain parallels are natural, whether through rhymes, phrasing, or similar genres,” he stated.
Pritam, who has had his own share of allegations in the past, added, “Focusing on minute details distracts from the broader perspective. In our interconnected creative landscape, artists aren’t intentionally duplicating others’ work. Crafting music demands a significant amount of effort and, if an idea resonates, collaboration is always an option.”
“Music encapsulates creativity, distinctive artistic vision, influence, and at times, sheer coincidence—especially among artists with a similar creative vibe. Rather than criticizing artists, it’s more constructive to celebrate their contributions,” he concluded, extending his best wishes to Jennie for her upcoming album. Here is the post:
Understanding the Controversy Surrounding BLACKPINK’s Jennie and Pritam
Jennie, a key member of the popular K-pop group BLACKPINK, has recently unveiled a promotional teaser for her song titled “Like Jennie.” While her fanbase has celebrated the clip, some Indian listeners have noted its perceived resemblance to the Rani theme from the film “Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani,” which was released in 2023 and features music by Pritam.
The Indian audience quickly pointed out the similarities in rhythm and melody, particularly highlighting the phonetic connection between ‘Jennie’ and ‘Rani.’ This observation sparked a wave of plagiarism assertions against Jennie. However, many users on social media have also expressed skepticism regarding these claims. One user humorously remarked on the irony of the situation, noting that for once, the controversy involved another artist in what seemed to be an act of copying from Pritam, rather than the reverse.
As discussions continue, Pritam has made his stance known, while Jennie has yet to issue any comments on the allegations.
