Musk: Tesla’s Optimus Affected by China’s Rare Earth Restrictions

A prototype of Tesla Inc.’s upcoming humanoid robot, known as Optimus, was showcased at the Seoul Mobility Show in Goyang, South Korea, on March 30, 2023. The event will run until April 9, highlighting advancements in automotive technology and innovation.

According to Tesla CEO Elon Musk, recent trade restrictions implemented by China on rare earth magnets have impacted the production of the Optimus robots, which heavily rely on these exported materials.

During a Tesla earnings call, Musk mentioned that the company is actively addressing the situation with the Chinese government, expressing hope for clearance to access these essential resources. Earlier this month, China enforced new export regulations on seven rare earth elements and magnets that are crucial across various sectors including defense, energy, and automotive technologies. This action appears to be a response to growing tariffs imposed by the United States, particularly those enacted during President Donald Trump’s administration.

Musk noted that the Chinese authorities have requested assurances that the rare earth magnets will not be utilized for military applications. “China desires some guarantees that these materials won’t serve military purposes, which they obviously won’t, as they are intended for a humanoid robot,” he stated.

The new export rules have raised concerns about a potential global shortage of these materials, now requiring exporters of certain rare earths to obtain licenses from China’s Ministry of Commerce. Notably, China holds a dominant position in the global market for rare earths, and experts suggest that the U.S. is not in a position to compensate for a shortfall in these critical resources.

In tandem, the Trump administration is considering imposing additional tariffs on all U.S. imports of essential minerals in light of these developments from China.

Is Future Growth in Jeopardy?

During the recent earnings call, Musk underlined the significance of humanoid robots to Tesla’s strategic direction. “The future of our company is fundamentally rooted in the development of large-scale autonomous vehicles and a considerable quantity of autonomous humanoid robots,” he affirmed.

Musk had previously outlined ambitions for the Optimus project, targeting the production of around 5,000 units this year as technological advancements unfold within Tesla’s overall business strategy. Additionally, he indicated that these robots would be utilized in Tesla’s electric vehicle production facilities.

It remains uncertain how the new export regulations might alter these production goals. However, Musk reassured stakeholders that the company still aims to manufacture thousands of robots this year, with plans for widespread deployment in Tesla factories.

The introduction of this new technology could buoy investor confidence as Tesla’s electric vehicle segment faces notable challenges, with stock prices dipping about 37% since the start of the year.

Steve Westly, founder and managing partner of The Westly Group, along with his experience as a former member of Tesla’s Board, emphasized the urgency for the company to identify a new avenue for growth soon. He posited that Tesla must stay ahead amid escalating competition from Chinese firms specializing in humanoid robotics.

Chinese companies like Unitree Robotics and AgiBot are reportedly gearing up for mass production this year, which could present a significant competitive edge as a result of the new export restrictions. According to analysts, this landscape could further tilt in favor of these Chinese competitors over their U.S. counterparts.

While Musk remains optimistic about Tesla’s position in the robotics sector, he acknowledges concerns that the competitive field may soon be dominated by Chinese enterprises.
